GAME 51 at Houston, Game Thread

Suddenly hot Rockets, suddenly icy Kings. Tip's at 5:30 p.m. Go Kings.

(Discuss the Kidd trade here. That thread might be more interesting than this one by the end of the night.)

Pre-Game Fodder
Quincy Douby was chosen as ESPN's worst player of last night. Has he finally arrived as an NBA player?

Whether your dominating the playground, the last one to leave the gym, or your big time like Mike Bibby...

Apparently
Well....0-5 isn't THAT bad.  Means he stopped shooting when he realized it wasn't his night.  Couldn't they find someone with 8 turnovers or something?

A Question
We all remember Chris Webber right? How he used to play on offense? He used to play pick-n-pop with Bibby all the time. He would set a screen for Bibby around the 18-20 foot mark and either Bibby would come off it and shoot or he would pass it back to C-Webb for a wide open jumper. I realise that was Adelman'd offense but why can't they do that now with either Miller or Artest? Both can shoot that 18 footer well and it's not a hard play to run. When Beno and Moore is in, they run the top of the arc pick and roll but that's not the same play. Why no pick-n-pop do ya think? Could even run that with Martin instead of Bibby.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

I expect the Kings to
play better tonight. Probably hang around through the first half, start falling behind in the 3rd and lose by double digits.

I hope we leave Artest in Texas and take Scola, Brooks and maybe a pick back to Sac.

Go Kings!

Kings respond and grab a win before heading to the all star break.

It's a guarantee that the Kings will play better because it's a good team we're playing.

Dear Ron
Please deliver a triple double tonight. Reak (good) havoc on the court. And accept any invitation that involves you spending extended time in the lone star state (no state taxes there Ron - you'd love it!).

I dont know why I'm such a Debbie-Downer
But I am not excited to watch tonight.  Last nights loss really got to me.  I was AT the Clippers game and watched the entire Sonics game the other night, but last nights game may have been the straw.
TZ was right, the younger guys were way more fun to watch.  I yearn (oh yes, YEARN) for a Beno-Martin-Salmons-<non-artest>-Miller line-up.  Garcia, Douby, Shaw and 3-Wil coming off the bench, yes please.  Even if they dont win as many games, they'll be so much more fun to watch.  Plus, it gives everyone a chance to improve, and see who can really help us out in the future.  Wouldnt it be nice to know how Beno holds up as a starter before deciding him to sign him in the off season?
I expect a loss, and a bad one at that.  I'll say down 20 some time in the third.  I hope I'm wrong.

Rockets started with McGrady covering Miller.

Alston doing his usual "torch Bibby" thing.

Scola out with 2 early fouls.

At the end of 1
Houston's up 35-20.

The Kings AS A TEAM only have 3 rebounds all quarter.  You can figure the rest out.

NBA League Pass is using the Rockets telecast, and their announcers want NOTHING to do with Ron.  I guess everyone in Texas isnt dumb.

One interesting part, on defense the Kings are leaving Mikki one-on-one with Yao.  Its not working.

I hope for Savage's sake it's for him
From a book I've been reading called Loose Balls (it's about the ABA):

The Floridians began life as the Minnesota Muskies, a franchise so well financed that after a 50-28 record in the ABA's 1st season it packed up & moved to Miami, where it put in 4 remarkable years before mercifully folding at the end of the 1971-72 season. The Floridians never did much on the court, but the weather was nice and the ballgirls were nicer.

From the Floridian's program from the first season:

There is little question that the Floridians boast the 4 prettiest "ball-boys" in all basketball-dom. The quintet were chosen in a bikini contest held last August....All 5 girls are highly talented. For instance, 2 of the girls, Sandy and Cindy Acker, are twins and majorettes at Norland High School. Vi Lloyd sings and dances professionally and already owns a pilot's license. Pinky White is a student at Miami Central's High School and aspires to become an actress. Janie Orman, a student at Miami-Dade North, is the outdoor type--she likes to ride horses, sail, and play tennis.

If the innovation catches on, there is a likelihood that spectators will attend ABA contest as much to appreciate feminine pulchritude as good basketball.

Call me cynical, but when I'm thinking about a female's "body", a woman's pulchritude (whatever that means) doesn't get in the way of wondering whether her boobs are fake & real. And neither does good basketball. I

Just so you know one ABA player (I think it was Dan Issel) called 'em the version of ABA strippers. LOL

We pull to within 13, and we don't deserve that
The only player on our team who can rebound is Williams tonight, and the Houston announcers were gloating about the fact that the Kings are worst in the league in TOs. 7 RBs in 7 minutes for Williams. No more than 3 for any other Kings players if my stats are right.

Ouch
You lose to a rockets team that scored 10 pts in the 4th qtr, outscored by Artest alone by 5, and all that and this ends up being another loss. I can't say that I care. I'm totally in-different at this point. I hope Artest has given Petrie a chance to deal him away for "reasonable" value.

Hell, I'm just
happy we didn't totally quit, 3-Will got some burn and Artest made a case to the rest of the league that he's worth another look.

Good game to end your Sactown career Ron. Good luck where ever you end up. Fingers crossed

I missed 3-Will's effort
and I don't really care until he gets it consistently.

I agree.
But if he had even a six foot range, we could play him a lot more. He is clearly a rebounding machine and his shot blocking is only going to get better. Even a little offensive touch we make him a staple at the 4. As it is, teams don't have to guard him.

or
Or, at the very least, a pass-first point guard to get him easy dunks.

That would definitely help
but he even missed one of those tonight. But I'd take it. I'd take it.

well put
wished it would have been a win, but ron took over that game. if this did turn out to be his last game, someone would probably say this game was analagous to his career here (esp. 2006), putting the kings on his back but not getting far enough.. but I'll have none of that, he was just a beast tonight. (disclaimer: I only watched the second half)

I'll be a ron artest fan for the rest of his playing days, but he needs to go. we want off your back, ron; it's scary up here.

If some team that is currently sitting between
5th and 10th doesn't make a serious run at him they are as crazy as he is.

Reggie On Artest: One of 10 Best in League
"Ron Artest played against a great basketball player (McGrady) and did an excellent defensive job on him," Kings coach Reggie Theus said. "That's one of the reasons that he is one of the 10 best players in this league, because he effects both the offensive and defensive ends."

That's probably pushing it, but Ron is clearly a unique talent.

Actually on that last play, it looked like McGrady had gotten by Artest and gotten help from Miller. Then McGrady kicked it out to Novak. I don't know who was supposed to be covering Novak, but it must have been a guard who sagged. Miller flew out to contest the shot, but to no avail.

Second Thoughts
Trade anyone but Ron.  He's the only player on this team who comes to ball every night.  Get a real point guard and a real power forward and build around Ron and Salmons.  Martin is quickly morphing into Peja II before our eyes.  Sell high on the kid, don't sell low on Ron.  Oh, well.

Interesting but evil thoughts
and clearly opposite of what most of the members of the group think.

Maybe you should turn it into a diary :)

Totally Disagree
With building around Artest AND Salmons.

They do NOT work together. Ron is an offensive ballhog and so is Salmons to a lesser extent. Salmons is better as the lone go to 1-on-1 guy. Look how well he played the first 7-10 games of the year. WITH NO ARTEST or at least with Artest not starting. Look at the statistics. Since then, he has been hit and miss on offense. Salmons and Artest will never work together on offense. Either trade Ron or Salmons but we can't keep both. They don't fit.

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Were Napear and Reynolds correct?
On that final Houston posession, when they said the Kings had a foul to give? Lord knows they've gotten it wrong before.

If they are right, it was a huge mistake not to use that foul. They had chances probably down to about 6 seconds to do so.  It would have made life considerably tougher on Houston.

And that last offensive set for the Kings...thpppt.

It was nice to see Justin get some burn though.

Yes they had a foul to give
It was a huge mistake--on Reggie's part if he didn't remind the team, on the players' part if he did. Had they fouled T-Mac on his penetration the win would have been much tougher for Houston to come by.

aside from the foul to give
I didn't know about the foul to give.  However, having watched the game of basketball, say, maybe once or twice it was obvious to even the casual observer that McGrady was going to drive and kick.  C'mon, Reggie and company, Artest had just bitched slapped McGrady.  When McGrady got into the the lane he was like a receiver hearing footsteps - there was no doubt he was getting rid of that ball because he did not want to get used again. That was a planned play coming out the of TO and the Kings and its coaching staff should have seen it coming from a mile away.  There was nobody within 5 feet of Novak. I was literally yelling at my TV when McGrady started his drive because you could see everbody converage the Novak start to slip over.  Gee, wonder what the sharp shooting white guy who just entered the f*cking game standing at the 3pt line is for....hmmmmm???????

And the ball
wound up in the hands of a guy just called up from the NBDL who had yet to score in the game. Such is life. If the choices had been Yao, T-Mac, or Novak taking the shot we all would have chosen Novak.

A better question is why 3-Wil was in the game with 2.5 seconds left and us down by two.

true
I agree with that, Section. My point, however, was that T-Mac wasn't going to shoot that shot. Artest was in his head and had just swatted the shit out of him. He didn't want to take the shot. Turns out after reading the paper, I found out the T-Mac actually ask Rick to place Novak in the game so he could kick out.

Still, your point is correct.
