The Kings Dancers Photos -- That's Not News

With Leather, written by the very funny Matt Ufford, posted some pictures Monday of a gang of Kings dancers drinking and carousing and such. It was not news value. It was entertainment value. If you read With Leather (in a feed reader if you're at work and don't want to get fired), you know why Matt posted it. Hell, in the post he even wondered if this would become a big enough deal to get the dancers fired, and said that's the drawback to posting them.

The post got spread far and wide. It was at the top of BallHype for a while. (As such, the link appeared in the BallHype widget in the left sidebar.) A reader posted the link in a comment to the Monday Footnotes shortly after WL posted the pictures. Skeets posted it, Deadspin posted it. It was everywhere. If you wanted/needed to see it, you could find it.

I decided not to post it here, even though this is only real Kings blog in the world. As I said, you could find it if you wanted to. I don't regularly link to photos of mostly naked women, and I didn't think an exception was necessary because Kings employees were involved. That's just not the type of site we have here, which isn't an indictment on other sites. Our focus is basketball, and other sites focus on other things. I think you all come here to discuss Kings basketball. (I might be wrong.) And I have nothing against the sites that posted it; it's just not me. (I even talked to Ufford over email about why I wasn't running it. I think he understood.)

Why am I even talking about this? Well, guess what story was more important to News10 last night than the arrest of a man long sought in a drunk-driving hit-and-run which resulted in the death of a teenager? More important than the Clemens story? More important than... the Kings game?

Several members of the Sacramento Kings dance team could face possible disciplinary action from the organization after sexually suggestive photos of team members were posted online.

Unfortunately, News10's not alone. The Bee's Sam Amick indicates the media badgered the team into a formal response.
From chatting with folks in Kings land, they've been cleaning up the mess for two days now, holding meetings on the subject and - when prompted on Wednesday - releasing a statement regarding the issue.

And Sam -- who stayed home for the Memphis-Houston road trip -- did some actual reporting on the matter, talking to sources of KHTK and ascertaining these photos were from last year. I like Sam a lot; I respect the hell out of him as a writer and someone who works his tail off. But why in Hades did he waste his time on this? Why is his post on the subject titled "Dancer debacle"? I mean, he seems to understand this isn't a big deal... but at the same time, he makes it seem like this is a big deal.

THIS IS NOT A BIG DEAL. These women are paid to gyrate in front of 17,000 14,000 12,000 fans every night; in only one of the pictures was their dress anything less than what they wear at center court. I assume Gavin Maloof understands that. I assume whichever VP is responsible for the dancers understands that. I assume Sam understands that. I would assume the producers at News10 understand that... but clearly they don't.

This story spread around the sports blogs because (surprise!) the typical reader of sports blogs is a bored man, age 18-50. You might find the subscriber base of Playboy is similar in demographics. Does that make the story fit for local TV news? No. So News10 wraps it in controversy to justify the reportage.

It was a stupid decision, and now the team has to wring its hands over it because 'By golly, people are mad!' when no one but a jaded producer and a handful of enabling reporters are actually mad, but that producer and those reporters have an inordinate amount of power in today's society because of the ever-decreasing length of our normal attention span and the allure of glowing pictures and surround sound. In print (on the web or on fishwrap), reporters like Amick can add the sentiment that this all doesn't matter. On TV, there's no time for hedging or explanation. If it leads, IT IS IMPORTANT. News10 told you this was a big deal and this is important, and it is not.

In short: Faux-puritanism masquerading as social self-righteousness is a scourge on this modern Earth.

</ridiculously overblown, caffeine-fueled rant>

(Game recap at some point in the near future.)

UPDATE: I've gotten a few emails about this, and I wanted to clarify (because it's unclear) that I'm not holding Sam and News10 in the same contempt. Because of a) his medium, and b) his brain, Sam was able to discuss how this isn't a big deal. News10 didn't (although I hear they pulled the story from their 11pm broadcast).

I should also add I still have some raw nerves about the way the local broadcast reporters treated the whole Justin Williams thing. I really don't like the way they cover the local team, if you can't tell.

holy s***balls batman!
Wait, so what you're saying is, those women aren't just put in storage after Kings games and viewing parties? At least it's nice to know my "hey, can I get you a drink" pick up line woud have worked last Saturday. Oh missed opportunities.

Oh and if you just copy and paste the game recap from the Grizzlies game it will still all apply. Just add "oh, and that comeback was a nice tease too" at the end.

Non-story
As a mom, I'm not crazy about those photos being available for my boys to see (thanks, TZ, for not posting them here), but they're not shockingly risque.

These are women who are eager to let men see them as nothing but objects and playthings. It's fairly sleazy, and somewhat sad, but certainly not a lead story on the news.

If people object, they're free to speak with their pocketbooks, or with their viewing choices.

Total non-story
And I loved the pics, but I've always been a pig. They certainly have nice cabooses, and I don't mind them showing them off. ;)

It would be pretty hypocritical for them to be disciplined for this, when it is only an extension of what their job really is - to keep the male patrons interested at the games.

I'm with you
TZ,

I'm with you on not posting or making a big deal out of the photos here.  This is a basketball site.  There's lots of other places on the Internets to get (half) naked people if that's what you're looking for.

As far as the dancers go, why is anyone surprised?  Did people think they wore floor length dresses and went to the 6:00 AM mass on Sunday?  Assuming they're not breaking the law, what they do on their own time (skanky or not) is their business, so it's completely inappropriate for the Kings to punish them.

The Maloofs DO own a Vegas casino, so there may actually be some promotions involved here.  ;-)

Allow me to add to the chorus of agreement

Wait, so what you're saying is, that mcuh opposite to the message Traditional Media keeps blaring about the promiscuity of the younger generations and the means young women to take advantage of our sexually driven society - whether it be forced sculpture of their bodies via plastic surgery, a hugly inflated beauty market, advertising and media that objectifies the feminine form to the point where a women is solely defined by her looks - that women are then bemoaned for filling these, ahem... "lofty" expectations?

Section already brought this up in a diary, more on the sports-journalism side of things, but nonetheless I'll reiterate the point I made then: traditional media is going to fail because it relies too strongly on the ignorance of the masses. On the internet, I can read about it, hear a diverse set of opinions on the matter, research the actions in question via means no more intensive than a few keystrokes, and come to my conclusion. That I can then decide that this is irrelevent and tune it out scares the shit out of the people who want to attract me via sensationalist news items that force me to stare at my boob-tube in despondency waiting for the next little tidbit, whilst they subject me to their advertising blah-blah.

sad
Sadly the organization will probably end up "disciplining" these girls, not because they think it's right, but because they feel they have to do something to address any public outcry. Can't one of these organizations stand up for themselves and maybe issue a statement along the lines of "The girls did nothing illegal, and we will not give in your hypocrisy and mock-outrage. The human body is not dirty or evil. Please get over yourselves" Just once? Please? Someone say that? I would totally say that if I had my own media empire...

My two cents
Allow me to smack this dead horse one time: I would not have objected if you'd referenced the pictures, even if only as part of a "footnotes" entry.  And, no, not just because I'm a red-blooded average guy.

Look, this is a Kings site, and you/we post lots of information that isn't strictly hard-core, on-the-court basketball stuff.  We're Kings fans, and we're generally interested in things Kings-related.  If nothing else, the post was worthy of note simply because (1) it was bound to be controversial, (2) others were taking note, leading to inevitable questions about whether the dancers' behavior reflects on the Kings organization, (3) it was a potential "distraction" to the organization, and (4) yes, it's something that large portions of your readers would want to know about.

This says nothing about whether it should have been the lead story in any new outlet; obviously, it shouldn't have been.  Nor does it mean that TZ was obligated to bring up the issue.  It's his house, and he can make his rules.  But I, for one, come to this site for its depth and its breadth, as a fairly comprehensive source for all Kings news, information, and commentary.  So I would have expected you to make a note of this matter, if not when it first came up then later, when the story had grown.

Which, I guess, you did today.

A follow-up
I should add that I agree with TZ that "this is not a big deal," in any sense.  Apart from one photo (arguably), nothing they did was truly outrageous or way out-of-line given what the dancers do every home game.  The dancers involved deserve a private talking-to because their conduct reflects poorly on the organization.

My point is that, in my humble opinion, StR visitors are best served by a buffet approach to news items, with Kings-related stories posted so long as they are consistent with fairness (i.e., don't post rumors that are malicious or defamatory) and good taste (i.e., no links to porn, autopsy photos, etc.)

But did I want to know that Koz and Grant not-so-secretly hate each other?  Yes.  Did I want to know that former King Keon Clark says he played his entire season half-drunk?  Yes.  Not a big deal, but appropriate filler for a Kings site.

For whatever it's worth....
I hadn't heard about any of this until just now (in this post).  I don't watch the local news and hadn't seen this online yet (don't usually go to too many sites from work).

I agree with Specast in that a footnotes bullet would have been fine, but I also wouldn't have had a problem if I had missed this entirely.  It's a semi-amusing "story" that definitely shouldn't be blown out of proportion.

I don't disagree, but...
I think the main point is that the gals weren't REALLY wearing any less than what they wear at game time; of which costumes the organization heartily approves of, I assume.

I would like them to say that...call the puritans on their hypocriticalness & get on with it. Show some balls, dammit.

Have em dance naked
If it puts asses in the seats. Just because you don't want your kids to see naked people, doesn't mean THEY don't wanna and aren't GOING to. Everybody gets naked and maybe has sex once per day if theyre lcuky. The biggest issue concerning all of this is why you're all afraid of nudity and sexuality, which I didnt see much of in those pics.

I am afraid
of neither nudity or sexuality, though I am always surprised and pleased when I am involved in either or both.
