Bibby to Hawks 'reached agreement'

Did I truly beat the SactownRoyalty community??

The Sacramento Kings have reached an agreement in principle to trade guard Mike Bibby to the Atlanta Hawks, the Sacramento Bee reported on its Web site Saturday.

The Kings are set to receive four players from the Hawks -- guards Anthony Johnson and Tyronn Lue and forward Lorenzen Wright and Sheldon Williams, according to the paper's sources.

The trade is pending league approval that may come as early as Saturday, the report said. Sources told the Bee that there is a 4 p.m. ET conference call scheduled between the teams and league officials.

The move would be largely a salary dump for the rebuilding Kings, with Bibby making $13.5 million this season and next and three of the incoming players having expiring contracts.

Umm some things from Marty Mac
The deal is contingent upon league approval that could come as early as today. According to sources who did not want to be identified because of ongoing trade discussions, there is a 1 p.m. conference call scheduled between the two teams and league officials.
Also  Marty Mac's article/ for your viewing perusing pleasure.

Kings have 14 roster spots taken
this is a 4-for-1 deal.

Kings needs to free up 2 spots before the deal is made, right?

Dahntay Jones and......?

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 16, 2008 1:26 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

NO
They don't have to do that. They don't have any reason to cut Jones. They could just cut everybody from the Hawks minus Shelden Williams. I don't think there is a rule saying you can't have 18 contracts on your roster Matt. I have to go to work soon but I'll check on that. (I mean via Larry Coon btw.)

Via Larry Coon
His tremendously well versed FAQ (bless you Larry):

64.  What roster size limits exist?  What is the Inactive List?  What is Injured Reserve?

A team must have 12 players on its active roster, although they can drop to 11 for up to two weeks at a time.  They must suit up at least eight players for every game.  Any remaining players must be on its Inactive List, and are ineligible to play in games.  A team must have a minimum of one and a maximum of three players on its Inactive List, although they can drop to zero for up to two weeks at a time, and can temporarily have four with league approval in the event of a hardship.  The composition of the Inactive List can change on a game-by-game basis -- no less than 60 minutes prior to tipoff, the team must present to the official scorer a list of the players who will be active for that game.  A player can be inactive for as little as one game.  While individual teams are only required to carry 13 players (12 active and one inactive), the NBA also guarantees a league-wide average of at least 14 players per team.  The league is surcharged if they do not meet this obligation.

Injured Reserve is the previous name for the Inactive List.  It was originally intended for players who were injured and unable to play, however teams often used it as a convenient place to stash extra players.  While a medical reason was required for players to be put on Injured Reserve, the league did not insist on an independent physician confirming the diagnosis. Thus it was common for a seemingly healthy player to suddenly develop "back spasms" right before rosters were cut to 12 players, and spend the entire season on Injured Reserve as a result.  With the current CBA they gave up the ghost, dropped the medical requirement, and changed "injured" to "inactive."

Players assigned to the NBA Developmental League (see question number 66) are automatically placed on their team's Inactive List.

I tried finding it there but couldn't
there's no mention of what to do when over the maximum roster space.

I think that a team can't at any time (once the season starts) have more than 15. So they can't acquire the Hawks players before waiving them, because that will mean that at one point they'll have over 15 roster players.

Matt
What I think you're describing is a money issue (I know you're well versed on Larry Coon--I more or less posted that for everybody else's sake).

As far as the difference of what you say I don't think there is anything from keeping a team on dumping 4 players for one as long as it works under the salary cap. Most teams don't do that, but this isn't most situations. The serious salary cap relief I think means the Kings would rather release every Hawk minus Shelden Williams coming their way rather than keep any of them.

I think what you're describing is a gray area that hasn't happened too many times in NBA's history. I do think it doesn't make any difference though. And I too am interested to see what happens here.

I assume this is why
both teams are conferencing with the league office. I bet they don't know for sure if they can do this this way.

I would bet the league isn't clear on it either

What the league could do Hoop
is just simply say Kings you have to waive 3 players and take 1 for this to work otherwise no deal. I bet the 3 Hawks players get waived. So in that vein Matt could be right and I, the pookeyassholeishknowitallone, is wrong.

The Bigger question now Matt is
Who does Atlanta get to fill that other roster spot? I don't think it really matters. They can get some D-League All-STar stud (Rod Benson!) to fill that 12th spot or something. Either way I haven't seen anything that says any team can't carry MORE than 15 players.

None of the above
I fully expect the Solomon Jones era to begin in Atlanta.

Well
If the Hawks trade 5 players that takes their roster down to 11. If they trade 4 players it takes it down to 12. So you're right they don't need to take on Benson. I just thought it would be funny to see him in a Hawks uni.

I'm not saying they don't need Benson
but the combination of Knight wanting to show he got something in the 2006 draft and Woodson's dislike (which is reciprocated) for Pachulia will probably just result in opponents getting even more offensive rebounds.

Take away his point guard carousel and Woodson won't go more than 7 deep anyway.

by Hoopinion on Feb 16, 2008 1:49 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Most coaches don't go further than 8 deep
Hoop. Why would Woodson be any different?

You're right
ignore the above comment. Stripped of his veterans, who knows how Woodson will react.

Be Happy the Kings were able to dump him
Because I'm not sure they could have gotten more than what they got. For Hawks side of things here is Sekou Smith's take on things.

With that contract
Bibby's a hard sell at this point.  His appeal is limited to the naive and desperate at this point.  Atlanta, thankfully, is both.

by thelettere on Feb 16, 2008 2:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Desperate
describes a laundry list of teams that could use what Bibby brings to the table.

I was really hoping for something more substantial in a prospect, but as it arises - I'll take Shelden and a second rounder if that means we can resign Beno.

Petrie better resign Beno.

Naive
however limits the field quite a bit.  Bibby is well known for what he has done, not for anything he is doing now.

It gets better
I keep thinking about that Reggie quote from the other night:

"Ron Artest played against a great basketball player (McGrady) and did an excellent defensive job on him," Kings coach Reggie Theus said. "That's one of the reasons that he is one of the 10 best players in this league, because he effects both the offensive and defensive ends."

I have a strange feeling, that having gotten rid of Bibby, they are going to hang onto "one of the 10 best players in this league."

Unless, or course, they get some value, picks, expirings, AND get rid of Kenny Thomas in the deal.
