GAME 55 at Orlando, Preview & Game Thread

SACRAMENTO KINGS (26-28)  107.8 ORtg (#15), 110.2 DRtg (#23), 92.8 Pace (# 8)
ORLANDO MAGIC    (35-22)  113.0 ORtg (# 4), 108.7 DRtg (#20), 91.8 Pace (#10)
BALLHYPE | NBA.com PREVIEW | THIRD QUARTER COLLAPSE

Color me surprised Stan Van Gundy has not instituted a solid defense in Orlando. His defensive acumen -- which tends to come with the 'Van Gundy' surname, as well as the programming chip Pat Riley implants in all his assistant coaches -- was the part of the package which most excited me about the near-hire in June.

Instead, Orlando can't force turnovers and have no rebounders beyond Dwight Howard. (The Magic still figure #6 in defensive rebounding; they should be top-3 with Dwight in the middle, though.) Given turnovers happens to be the Kings' irresistible weakness, this is a good sign -- so long as Kevin Martin, Ron Artest, and Brad Miller don't get their passes deflected too much (Charlotte was an abomination on this count), the turnovers should stay below 15, which should help the Kings offense put up a good performance.

The other major concern -- Orlando's threes. They have a few guys (Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis) who can hit those bombs regardless of defense. But closing out on Keith Bogans and Keyon Dooling, etc. -- that's key. If not, the Magic can shoot 45% from the field and still put up 110 points. Combined with Howard's inside game, it's no wonder this is the #6 offense in the league. It's a beautiful strategy if you've got the gunners and the inside safety valve, and Orlando certainly has the gunners and the inside safety valve.

We're about due for a 30-point night from Martin, and I'm envisioning a big game for Beno Udrih against the woeful perimeter defense of Orlando. As long as the defense is passable, the Kings should be in this game. The offense could put them over the top.

Game's go the early tip -- 3 p.m. local time. Go Kings.

Very winnable
The Magic have struggled a little bit at home in comparison to their road record.

Dwight Howard will be a handful while Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu can go off anytime.

Rashard, Hedo etc... have never been solid defenders  and the Kings offense will do well against the Magic.

The Magic's Defense

The Magic actually played pretty damn good defense in the early part of the season (defensive rating in November: 100.9), but it's gotten progressively worse. This post at 3QC graphically illustrates the Magic's poor defense, using the four factors. You can also check out my preview of tonight's game here /shamelessplug

Enjoy the game. I'll be in attendance, which is a good sign for Kings fans. The Magic are 3-4 in games I've attended this season. All four of the losses were against Western teams.

I wonder
how much the other team's guy dwells on the physical implications of Ron Artest coming to town. For example, I can't think that Hedo can be too excited about having to go nose to nose with Ron tonight. I also wonder what the after effects are. They always talk about a pitching staff being worn out after a series in Colorado. Do you think there is any residual effect to an evening of dancing with Artest?

i've noticed
that artest punishes people who aren't shot blockers. being that turkoglu has averaged 0.3 bpg for his career, hopefully this will hold true today.  i've heard that howard does like to block a shot every now and then though.

Oomgowaye!
Sekou Smith calls Artest an Oomgowaye!

An Oomgowaye (um-gow-wah, hey since this is the first time it's being written, I can do it how I see fit) is quite simply a guy who plays with a force that overpowers all others on the floor and therefore gives his team a physical edge that can't be matched by the opposition.
...
The Hawks have run into a few the past few weeks or so, none who fit the description better than Sacramento's Ron Artest.

When faced with the Hawks' impressive assortment of athletically gifted and graceful young players Artest resorted to what I like to call the Truck Robinson approach (for all you youngsters out there, Leonard "Truck" Robinson was basically the Artest of the 1970s and 80s, a physical monster with the ability and skill to play inside out and basically dominate opponents with sheer physicality. I used to hear my pops talk about him all the time and along with my older brother have always used him as a baseline for tough as nails players like that).

Artest, who is far bigger than Robinson ever was (6-7, 260 compared to 6-7, 225) manhandled the poor Hawks Wednesday night at Arco Arena. He was pushing everybody around, doing it all while playing with a controlled aggression that can eliminate the opposition's chances of ever taking control of the game when he's on the floor because they have no way of matching his pure physical prowess.
...
He admitted that it was strictly a physical thing. He overpowered the Hawks inside and out, dictating to the Hawks how he wanted the game to be played. He loves the athleticism and grit of guys like Josh Smith and Al Horford, but he knew they couldn't match him. He knew there was no one in a Hawks uniform that night that could match him.

That night Artest was the Oomgowaye Smitty is
always talking about.

Seems Sekou's Atlanta's answer to Marty Mac:

Having known Artest for years now, it was a treat to watch him work again (we both did time in Indiana earlier this decade when the Pacers were among the league's elite teams). After the game I bumped into him at a local restaurant in Sacramento and we talked about all things basketball, including the way he dominates opponents like the Hawks.
...
(we talked about quite a few other things but none of that will be repeated here, sorry).

Sad, because I had pretty much enjoyed his articles up to this point (not that I'd read him in-depth).

One response to Sekou's blog post offers a couple of different definitions,

Sekou my internet pals say this might help with your Oomgowaye but I believe Tarzan use this definition.

Somewhat funny is that the first definition the poster give references cheese.

I must confess, I've had a few Oomgowaye!/Umgawa feelings for Ron-Ron myself. Of course, I base that on the second link's rejected definition. Or on the first link's definition that it can mean whatever I want it to mean.

Umgawa, Ron-Ron!

A game like this
where the other team starts Lewis at the 4. It seems like we should play a lot of Artest at the 4. That would also allow us to use Miller and Moore at the 5. Not sure how Hawes would do against Howard, if Miller gets in foul trouble.

Ginobili has taken
90 more threes this year than Cisco. Garcia averages 1.6 3pm per game.

Ginobili: 2.4

Using Ginobili was a bad mistake, the difference is a miniscule 0.1 per game.

From this point on I will no longer discuss Garcia, alot of you seem to lose it when it comes to him.

From this point on I will no longer discuss Garcia,

Although I won't attempt to hound you over it, and I think you've already reneged on it (I could be wrong, but it's hard to tell with the nested comments).

There's really no need to denigrate every other Kings player that you feel threatens/diminishes Ron Artest's value.

Ron is a great player.  He is also an erratic person, both on and off the court.  There is no denying his ABILITY and skill.  He is also a very risky bet for a team's future.

Did he get a bum rap on the dog (bone infection and he was out of town at the time)?  Yes.

The domestic violence charge? In my opinion only, yes, he probably got a bum rap.  He's been on both ends of this accusation in the past.  Somebody had to go to jail and he had a three year old in the house.  He chose to leave the mother in the home.  That's just my opinion (please don't respond to this part of my post), but I really think they were probably both at fault.  The most appalling thing to me is that either parent would act like this in front of their small child.

I can't speak to the truth of either of these charges and they don't influence my opinion of him.

He is a great player when he plays as part of the team.  The question is, how long will he play as part of a team when they're not winning or he's not the first option on offense? Or the highest paid player on the team?

He is also a huge drama queen.  We all know people like this, both in real life and on the internet.  They live only for the drama and the turmoil and the attention. They're fun, exciting, annoying, and ultimately draining.

I'm tired of being drained by this team.

he doesn't control his playing time. and so what if ginobili has taken 90 more? percentages are percentages. i didn't say he was better than ginobili. i simply stated facts. his percentage was better than ginobili's. i didn't say how much better. if you're 0.0001 % better at something than someone, you're still better.

I dont..
Mean to interrupt the official Beno Lovefest website (STR), but I havnt seen anyone criticize him for the shit game he had tonight! This is the one concern I had about getting rid of Bibby. Were gonna need more points out of him on a nightly basis due to our lack of ppg out of the 4 spot!

and FYI..I like Beno and hope he plays his way into a starting spot for years to come. But if Bibby had had the kind of game Beno did tonight, there would have been at least 2 diaries on STR calling for his head! very very interesting...

by Hoops916 on Feb 24, 2008 5:59 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

gotta disagree
a lot of beno's offense depends on two things:
  1. getting to the basket.. there was some guy named dwight howard on the floor tonight
  2. open shots through the offense running smoothly.. don't think I need to tell you that this didn't happen tonight. the offense was terrible.

and beno is not bibby. bibby took shots away from k-mart, the much more efficient/all around better offensive player. bibby was first and foremost a scorer, beno is definitely not that. I'm not saying that he had a great game tonight-- far from it, 4 turnovers and 6 assists is not going to cut it-- but when the offense is awful, he's not the guy who is going to carry you. he's not mike bibby and he's certainly not steve nash. you could blame his game and the lackluster offense on a lot of things, but it comes down to the fact that the magic were just a much better team than us tonight.

no need to hate on a player who is (unexpectedly) one of the big reasons for this team not being down there with memphis or seattle or the 2007 kings.

sorry, a clarification on that last statement.. I don't mean that beno shouldn't be criticized, I mostly meant that there's no need to "call for his head" after 2 bad games where almost everyone on the team deserves criticism

I'm
not hatin on Beno. I actaully really do pull for the guy (despite my appreciation for Bibby and my reluctance to want to trade him). I was just staing that he (or our backup PG) is simply gonna have to put up buckets. Losing Bibby leaves a huge PPG void at the 1 spot. (Remember, we dont exactly have a scoring machine at the 4)

I wasnt calling for "his head". I just wanted to point out that had Bibby played like this, ALMOST everyone on STR would have been talking about how terrible he is. I find it somewhat ironic that no one criticizes Beno when he plays that bad.

Sorry for the confusion

I can think of 13 million reasons
Also, one can expect ups and downs with a young point guard during his 1st season as a starter, less room for that with a "clutch veteran". But, yes Beno had a pretty poor game tonight.

PG situation
I don't like Beno as a starter if we want to become a championship team. I just don't. He's a back-up point guard (though a very good one).
