Post-Apocolyptic Footnotes
- How are those Reggie Rules going? The whole 'South Beach flu' thing, I thought, was a joke in this instance. Apparently not: "There was some question before Tuesday's game whether Ron Artest would be ready to play that night, as the Kings small forward had missed the shootaround that morning with what was deemed stomach issues and a headache." Awesome. It really was that at least one and likely more guys cared more about having a good time than getting closer to .500. Completely awesome. Glad the band stayed together.
- A Mike Bibby poem.
- Another thing about the South Beach flu -- who cares? It's not an excuse. The Heat were 5-27 at home before Tuesday. 27 times the opponent had all the trappings of Miami at their fingertips and still managed to beat the worst team in the league. Never mind losing by 20.
- Can you tell I'm a little frustrated? I don't throw Guernica around lightly.
- David Thorpe on Spencer Hawes: "Spencer Hawes continues to impress me with his scoring ability, but he hasn't shown me much else. Without a real commitment to reshaping his body -- and improving his agility -- this offseason, I worry that he won't find a place in the Kings' rotation next season." I tend to disagree a little on whether Hawes will stay in the rotation. For all the lip service paid to defense and energy by Theus, he plays guys who score (Garcia over Salmons lately, Hawes over the Williamses). Hawes can certainly score, and that alone will keep him in Reggie's good graces.

Amick Drops The Ball
Apparently, either does Amick or anyone else, because Amick dropped the ball in his desire to get a "scoop."
The sentence missing from the story:
Asked if he and other players on the team had partied too much the night (or nights) before and taken the Heat for granted, Artest said, "XXXXX."
Come on, Amick, ask the question unless you don't have the guts to, but refrain from printing idle speculation in the meantime. Be a journalist, not a drama queen.

Maybe Implied
It's like a man coming home late and his wife speculating he was with another woman.
You guys lost to Miami? You must have partied too much. It's the only explanation.
I'm sure the Heat would like a little credit for breaking through.

Defnitely not proven
I'm not just blaming your boy Artest. Looked like quite a few players went to the club with him.

Thorpe
However, he is wrong about whether Hawes will be in the Kings' rotation: the NBA is a scorer's league, and he is always going to be able to score - too many tools inside and out not to.

Do you realize that the Magig C of the future is Howard....And ours appears to be Hawes!!!!!
And they are damn near the same age!
That is some depressing ass shit!

All
I wasnt trying to compare the skills of the 2 men.
I was just stating that as a Kings fan, it sucks not to have a player that other squads fans' aernt envious of in any way shape or form! (one could argue Martin, but then again, talented scoring 2's aernt too difficult to come by nowadays)

umm
Secondly, once again your off base with your analogies. Bogut, although I dont mean to endorse him cause I'm not THAT impressed yet, plays the 5 position. This year he is averaging 13.4 ppg and 9.1 Rebs on 50% shooting. He pulled down 20 boards a few nights back. Not too bad huh? So...Yeah, I'd say that there IS a difference besides the 9 draft slots
I can only hope that one day Hawes can pull down 9 a night, going towards 10. But considering his lack of mobility/strength around the hoop, I dont foresee that happening.
And considering he is our C of the future, I'd like the Kings to finally have a big man who plays BIG. We avnt had one since Webb (pre-surgery of course)
I found this quote by Theus in the paper today pretty indicitive of our true weaknesses right now....... (Talking about Williams)
""He has something we don't have on this team," Theus said of the second-year player out of Duke. "Outside of Ron (Artest), we don't have anybody around the basket who has any physicality, and we need that. We need to have a strong presence down there. I told him that defense and (strong play down low) will get him moving forward right quickly."
Thats pretty bad when your ONLY player with any true physicality is a 3!!!!!!!
Thats why I said it was depressing watching Howard/Hawes and ondering the 2 teams' futures. My post wasnt meant to be confrontational or anything like that, just posting a quick thought. But you seem to find an argument out of anything. Cool Life Champ!

Now
Looking back on my comment, I could have substituted Howard with "Any young, athletic big" and it would have sufficed. I just dont want another Brad Miller (yes, I understand he is having a GOOD year) for the next 5-7 years. I like the idea of having a big man who plays BIG!
Maybe I'm just too optimistic..and it pains me to see franchises like the Magic who have these young (or relatively young) athletic/physical Bigs!

And..
Reflecting for a minute on my previous post, I dont think I'm being too optimistic. Below is a list of teams who I consider to have young (or relatively young) talented, athletic/physical BIGS
Magic, Lakers, Minnesota, Atlanta, N.O, Charlotte, Clips, Miami (I'm including Beasley on the roster), Mil, Phoenix, Portland, Utah, Houston, NJ (Kristic ???? Maybe)
and that lists does not include teams with talented, athletic/physical BIGS who are slowly getting older.
Denver, Boston, Detroit, IND, Spurs
Looking closely at my quick list. That puts us as one of 11 teams with no young (or relatively young) talented/physical BIG. And some of these 11 teams are already good (such as Dallas), so I can't feel bad for them.
Wow, now THATS depressing!

I'm...
I compared the two because theyre similar ages and the fact that they are both the 5's of the future for their respective teams.
Difference being...Our 5 leaves little room for optimism in the up-coming years!

Shawes
I hated the Shawes signing in the draft. Hated, hated, hated, hated, um etc.
But he's starting to win me over even with his limited minutes. He has great footwork for a 19 year old, he can score and he can pass. Not great, but promising for a kid who gets very few minutes, so I am optimistic.

I
But in order for that to happen, he will NEED a powerful/athletic 4 playing next to him because he simply isnt tough enough around the hoop. Granted, he is young and has time to grow and get stronger, but he's still a very slow jumper (if thats what he tries to do when he lifts both feet off the ground), which will never allow him to become an effective rebounder. You can teach fundamentals all day long, but if you arent quick off your feet and strong (if your playing the 5) you will simply get eatin up in the NBA.

So,
Like Miller had before Webber went down?
Settle down, I'm just playing.
I agree with you, as he is now. No telling what he will turn into with time and better conditioning. It's too early to write him off the way you did. There is no Kings player who blocks more shots per 48 (tongue in cheek since he has a .29/9 minutes ratio). It's too easy to extrapolate that out to a meaningless 1.45 per 48 minutes. It's another meaningless stat, but it is encouraging.
Fun with numbers, yay!

Not another candy-ass who is afraid to mix it up a bit. Those only work if you have a True athletic/physical PF! Ala Divac and Webb
From your earlier statement you seem quite enamored with Hawes. I'm still optimistic he'll be a "decent" Big, but I can't stand much more of this BIG man making a living on the elbows shit we've been forced to watch the past few years

Actually
All I said is that I think Hawes has upside and that we need a power forward.
And I wouldn't in a million years call Vlade Divac either physical or athletic. Talented, sure. Crafty, you bet. But athletic? I think even Vlade would laugh at being called athletic.
