GAME 57 at Atlanta, Game Thread
I think instead of watching the game tonight, I'll have a warm compress against my head and a Bloody Mary in front of me. I have the 'Davis flu,' which is devastating to someone from Vacaville.
Go (to hell) Kings.

i dont even feel like watching
I think that's a copout TZ
Is TZ opting out?
Of course, tomorrow we'll hear that he'd really like to blog for the Knicks and that he's worth at least $13-14.
As long as he doesn't start talking about Jesus wearing sandals, or government cheese...

Hard to tell
I do feel that the Kings will give a better effort against the Hawks. I think, in all seriousness the Kings will walk out with a close win against the Hawks.
I will be commemorating Mike tonight by donning his autographed road purple jersey.
Thanks, Mike for all the memories. (Minnesota Game 1 being my favorite)
I wonder if Woody
Hawks are up now 21-10

If the Hawks win I wonder what what this will do for Sekou Smith after this rant.
Since starting to write this the Hawks are now up 97-89. Miller going to the line for 2 though.

What happens when 2 mediocre
Terrible shot by Ron
Beno missed the shot
For the record
Childress now is at the line for 2. I like Josh Childress. I'm a fan of the guy. If I had to pick a player of the game, and I guess I'll weigh in here, I'll say Childress and Bibby both deserve it. Bibby's impact tonight was what the Hawks were looking at when they made this trade.
Josh Childress
Very poised, good ballhandler, good leaper. Very funky shot, but him and Kmart could have a funky shot contest every night.

Id' like Childress
Hawks up 117 110
Beno makes a layup
Hawks up 117-112.
Horford on the night has
Hawks up 119-112
Artest's 3 makes it 121 117
Sorry, but you better get used to it...
Things getting ugly is part of what rebuilding is about. Crappy road trips are what happens to teams that are taking the first few steps in redefining who they are. Remember, the Lakers, Jazz, Celtics, etc. all had to spend time wandering in the wilderness before returning to the top.
Ask yourself this, would you rather suffer defeat now and try keeping a little perspective, or be mediocre now, win a few, lose a few, on and on indefinitely into the future?
I'm not that dismayed I suppose
Ron Ron
In any case, say what you want about Artest, (and you and I agree that he needs to go) but the guy's a competitor, and he's been playing really well over the past few weeks. In particular he seems to have cut down on the low percentage perimeter shooting by quite a lot, and that's always has been the most frustrating part of his game, in my opinion.
The other and by far the biggest problem with Ron obviously is his history as a ticking human time bomb, one you don't want to be holding onto if and when he goes off.
If Petrie was clearly committed to keeping Ron Artest on the team as part of an overall rebuilding strategy, then yeah, I'd I've a problem with that and be griping about it at StR too. But the fact is that Petrie worked hard to deal Artest, and apparently made a calculated decision to not accept a low ball offer for him.
You obviously don't agree with that decision, Pookey, but as I've argued previously, that kind of criticism is a lot easier to make when
A) you don't have a thorough knowledge of what offers were or weren't on the table, and
B) you're basically simply logging on to the Trade Machine in your spare time to play Junior GM (as most of us, including me, like to do around here), pretending to pull the trigger on big decisions to save the team.
In the real world Geoff Petrie isn't just thinking about a single deal or player. I think it's safe to assume he has a long-term game plan for the franchise in mind, and he has to deal with and sometimes outsmart opposing GM's year in year out, not just get the best deal he's offered at the 2008 deadline. These decisions are worth millions and millions of (real) dollars of his bosses money, and they will effect the franchise and his reputation and effectiveness as an NBA Executive for (actual) years to come.
If GP starts to get a reputation as somebody who will blink in a showdown, who will make moves out of desperation and therefore who you can punk or deal garbage to, he'll continue to see low-ball offers. And that's not acceptable.
So go ahead and point a finger at him if you want, but frankly, the criticism seems a little naive to me.
Bottom line: it's gonna get worse before it gets better around here in terms of wins and losses, so I wouldn't sweat what happens much between now and April 16th.
Jared don't take this personally

I played with the trade machine alot, and still sometimes do, but mostly I'm not these days willing to do so. The ESPN trade machine works well, but in all reality I think you're looking at funny scenarios. My big Ron trade idea was going to GS for Brandan Wright (as the key piece in the return package). Obviously it didn't happen, but again as I said I never believed Denver was a good destination. Miami, Houston and Golden State all seemed to me far better fits for Ron's talents (that even factors in my criticism of Ron in the game against Charlotte when I said he isn't a true open court player).
- Trading Artest is difficult--and it would have been a better overall package than what Indiana got--Peja Stojakovic which turned into Al Harrington--which then turned into Mike Dunleavy
- Other than Bibby and Artest; Brad Miller is the only real other trade quantity that the Kings have/had on the market
- Other than the aforementioned 3, who else was there to trade? Martin (can't he's PPP this season and BYC next season), Garcia (same thing if he gets an extension), Salmons (what kind of quality are you going to get back for a guy making 5.5 million?), Hawes (same thing--and isn't he too young to give up on?), Douby makes too little money to base a trade off his salary alone
some good points
Still, from what I've read Artest was pretty much on his way to Denver but their ownership got in the middle and nixed the deal due to a personal connection with Klieza. I've got a feeling that in about 7 weeks, when they find themselves down 2-nothing and behind by 15 in game three of their first round series vs the Spurs or the Lakers , the Nuggets will be the ones regretting not pulling the trigger.
I'll say this though, heck yeah, man, if Brandan Wright and the Warriors trade exception could've been acquired for Artest and an expiring contract (as you proposed) I woulda been very fine with that! Wright was a lottery pick after all... like the 7th or eighth guy off the board last year I think, and he has the chance (and the wingspan!) to be a special kind of player at a position we desperately need to upgrade.
By comparison, with Yao done for the year, the Nuggets are gonna crawl back into the playoffs (from which they will be promptly dispatched, and even Linas Klieza and Eduardo Najera won't be able to save them ;>) ). That means their 2008 pick will be in the 15-20 range I believe. As you know, it's tough to get an impact player drafting way down there, Pookey. Not impossible, but the odds of landing a player who can really make a big difference for your team tend to drop-off steeply after the top 5 to 8, and it's historically waaaay more of a crapshoot after the first 12-15 picks.
It's funny, Pookey... you definitely know you're stuff, and when you succinctly and calmly sum up what you think about the situation (like in this last post), I don't disagree with you all that much. But when you get on a roll and start in about how you "hate" Geoff Petrie and label him a "friggin idiot", I start to roll my eyes a little bit.
The guys track record should earn him a little more respect than that.
Jared
Always enjoy the conversing Jared.
Cheers, Pookey...
(I'm gonna try one while stoned and see if I can't fix this impending luxury tax squeeze for the Kings!)
Just for the record though, yep, you did indeed say the non-trade was unforgivable, and you also speculated that Petrie's ego got in the way in the situation (which is a pretty big speculation, IMO), but you also did in fact pin the "friggin idiot" epithet on Geoff. It was on the "Welcome Back, Ron" diary back on Thursday.
"oh my god I just need to shoot myself, Petrie is a friggin idiot! I hate this!" etc
I remember thinking that you probably just needed to get out and take a walk or something, and it reminded me of how damned frustrating it can be to be a sports fan sometimes.
Junior High School is tough enough by itself, but I'm still not over the emotional scars left by the Giants losing the NLCS to the Pirates in '71. :(
Anyway, have a great day, Pookey.
Clarification
I stand by every comment I've made on Petrie regarding his ego getting in the way though (except the idiot part which was really more or less made in anger and in jest).
You have a great day as well Jared.
Didn't catch the game
Ummmmmm
Just a guess.
