GAME 57 at Atlanta, Game Thread

I think instead of watching the game tonight, I'll have a warm compress against my head and a Bloody Mary in front of me. I have the 'Davis flu,' which is devastating to someone from Vacaville.

Go (to hell) Kings.

I think that's a copout TZ
You're setting a poor example for your StR brethren. You're not going to get that big contract in the off-season the way you're behaving.

Wait, no. He's staying.

Of course, tomorrow we'll hear that he'd really like to blog for the Knicks and that he's worth at least $13-14.

As long as he doesn't start talking about Jesus wearing sandals, or government cheese...

Too bad the Denver Post
decided not to go through the trade, because they didn't want to morgage their future by giving up Andy Vuong. I guess they decided winning now isn't that important.

Hard to tell
I had a strong feeling the Kings could be upset by Miami but I didn't envision a 21 point blowout with everything coming so easily for them.

I do feel that the Kings will give a better effort against the Hawks. I think, in all seriousness the Kings will walk out with a close win against the Hawks.

I will be commemorating Mike tonight by donning his autographed road purple jersey.

Thanks, Mike for all the memories. (Minnesota Game 1 being my favorite)

I wonder if Woody

Yep
Bibby has not fit in with the Kings for the past 5 years because he does better with an athletic team. Chris Webber, Doug Christie, Bobby Jackson were all athletic and could run the floor and finish. The current Kings have none of those players so that's why Bibby didn't fit in here. That's why the Kings need a drive and dish PG like Nash instead of a shooting PG like Bibby.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

The Hawks kept passing the ball effectively looking for a shot. That being said letting Horford get a shot up with barely being touched in un-acceptable.

When Mike Bibby sat down in the 2nd qtr the Hawks really struggled. I guess Woodson has figured out that keeping Johnson & Bibby out of the game at the same time (minus a blowout) is not a successful formula. Gee who woulda thought that?

If the Hawks win I wonder what what this will do for Sekou Smith after this rant.

Since starting to write this the Hawks are now up 97-89. Miller going to the line for 2 though.

I'm tired of saying this as I feel like a broken

And you know what why did the Kings foul? Who really cares? You've lost. You can't make up 4 points without TO's. This is a crappy trip so far. An absolutely crappy road trip. There is no way that this team can keep rebounding from every mis-step the way it has. It's bound for a huge let down at some point. As i've said before what's the comments going to be like now? This may get real real ugly.

Sorry, but you better get used to it...
or you're gonna blow a gasket Pookey, old chum.

Things getting ugly is part of what rebuilding is about. Crappy road trips are what happens to teams that are taking the first few steps in redefining who they are. Remember, the Lakers, Jazz, Celtics, etc. all had to spend time wandering in the wilderness before returning to the top.

Ask yourself this, would you rather suffer defeat now and try keeping a little perspective, or be mediocre now, win a few, lose a few, on and on indefinitely into the future?

I'm not that dismayed I suppose
It's not the rebuilding. It's the fact Artest remains that's the heart of my issue. It's grinding the gears for the entire team. And the only finger at this point to point at anyone is Petrie.

Ron Ron
... won't be around by the time the Kings have re-tooled and are back in the hunt, so I don't quite see what difference it makes what gears he's "grinding" between now and the end of the season, Pookey.

In any case, say what you want about Artest, (and you and I agree that he needs to go) but the guy's a competitor, and he's been playing really well over the past few weeks. In particular he seems to have cut down on the low percentage perimeter shooting by quite a lot, and that's always has been the most frustrating part of his game, in my opinion.

The other and by far the biggest problem with Ron obviously is his history as a ticking human time bomb, one you don't want to be holding onto if and when he goes off.

If Petrie was clearly committed to keeping Ron Artest on the team as part of an overall rebuilding strategy, then yeah, I'd I've a problem with that and be griping about it at StR too. But the fact is that Petrie worked hard to deal Artest, and apparently made a calculated decision to not accept a low ball offer for him.

You obviously don't agree with that decision, Pookey, but as I've argued previously, that kind of criticism is a lot easier to make when

A) you don't have a thorough knowledge of what offers were or weren't on the table, and
B)  you're basically simply logging on to the Trade Machine in your spare time to play Junior GM (as most of us, including me, like to do around here), pretending to pull the trigger on big decisions to save the team.

In the real world Geoff Petrie isn't just thinking about a single deal or player. I think it's safe to assume he has a long-term game plan for the franchise in mind, and he has to deal with and sometimes outsmart opposing GM's year in year out, not just get the best deal he's offered at the 2008 deadline. These decisions are worth millions and millions of (real) dollars of his bosses money, and they will effect the franchise and his reputation and effectiveness as an NBA Executive for (actual) years to come.

If GP starts to get a reputation as somebody who will blink in a showdown, who will make moves out of desperation and therefore who you can punk or deal garbage to, he'll continue to see low-ball offers. And that's not acceptable.

So go ahead and point a finger at him if you want, but frankly, the criticism seems a little naive to me.

Bottom line: it's gonna get worse before it gets better around here in terms of wins and losses, so I wouldn't sweat what happens much between now and April 16th.

Jared don't take this personally
We just really disagree on this. I agree with much of your overall and NBA knowledge. Just not alot of this particular statement.

The other and by far the biggest problem with Ron obviously is his history as a ticking human time bomb, one you don't want to be holding onto if and when he goes off.
Which is why Artest needed to be traded. I can't say it any other way than that.

Actually some of Petrie's post non-trade comments suggested that could be a possibility. I don't know if the recent "South Beach Flu" is being over blown or not, and I don't care. I care about the fact that Petrie didn't trade Artest for 2 expiring contracts and a 1st round pick.

Jared I never thought Denver was a very viable prospect as a Ron-Ron destination. I still think it would be a difficult prospect to work out for Karl as well as Iverson/Melo. That being said it was widely reported by the Bee, the Denver Post and ESPN that the only thing holding up the deal was Linas Kleiza (which is something I really don't get).

I played with the trade machine alot, and still sometimes do, but mostly I'm not these days willing to do so. The ESPN trade machine works well, but in all reality I think you're looking at funny scenarios. My big Ron trade idea was going to GS for Brandan Wright (as the key piece in the return package). Obviously it didn't happen, but again as I said I never believed Denver was a good destination. Miami, Houston and Golden State all seemed to me far better fits for Ron's talents (that even factors in my criticism of Ron in the game against Charlotte when I said he isn't a true open court player).

If GP starts to get a reputation as somebody who will blink in a showdown, who will make moves out of desperation and therefore who you can punk or deal garbage to, he'll continue to see low-ball offers. And that's not acceptable.
I'm not sure Petrie getting a higher offer will make GM's want to deal with him in the future. You're saying that GM's will think of him as soft if he traded Artest for the rumored package to Denver? I highly doubt that for these reasons:

  1. Trading Artest is difficult--and it would have been a better overall package than what Indiana got--Peja Stojakovic which turned into Al Harrington--which then turned into Mike Dunleavy
  2. Other than Bibby and Artest; Brad Miller is the only real other trade quantity that the Kings have/had on the market
  3. Other than the aforementioned 3, who else was there to trade? Martin (can't he's PPP this season and BYC next season), Garcia (same thing if he gets an extension), Salmons (what kind of quality are you going to get back for a guy making 5.5 million?), Hawes (same thing--and isn't he too young to give up on?), Douby makes too little money to base a trade off his salary alone

The fact is Petrie has a few options over the summer at his disposal to trade Artest. I would be shocked if the yield returned anything more than expiring contract and the 1st round pick. All Petrie did was add to the drama and difficulty, of a tough rebuilding project, on a team that has been worn out by the dramatic rendetions of players over the last 5 years. Petrie blinked, and what he would have gotten back from Denver wouldn't have qualified as him getting screwed, sorry.

some good points
and especially cogent is that, anyway you cut it, and as you say, Artest is a tough guy to trade. Coaches and GM's love the physical talent and the intensity, but the wild card intangibles are off-the-chart risky.

Still, from what I've read Artest was pretty much on his way to Denver but their ownership got in the middle and nixed the deal due to a personal connection with Klieza. I've got a feeling that in about 7 weeks, when they find themselves down 2-nothing and behind by 15 in game three of their first round series vs the Spurs or the Lakers , the Nuggets will be the ones regretting not pulling the trigger.

I'll say this though, heck yeah, man, if Brandan Wright and the Warriors trade exception could've been acquired for Artest and an expiring contract (as you proposed) I woulda been very fine with that! Wright was a lottery pick after all... like the 7th or eighth guy off the board last year I think, and he has the chance (and the wingspan!) to be a special kind of player at a position we desperately need to upgrade.

By comparison, with Yao done for the year, the Nuggets are gonna crawl back into the playoffs (from which they will be promptly dispatched, and even Linas Klieza and Eduardo Najera won't be able to save them ;>) ). That means their 2008 pick will be in the 15-20 range I believe. As you know, it's tough to get an impact player drafting way down there, Pookey. Not impossible, but the odds of landing a player who can really make a big difference for your team tend to drop-off steeply after the top 5 to 8, and it's historically waaaay more of a crapshoot after the first 12-15 picks.

It's funny, Pookey... you definitely know you're stuff, and when you succinctly and calmly sum up what you think about the situation (like  in this last post), I don't disagree with you all that much. But when you get on a roll and start in about how you "hate" Geoff Petrie and label him a "friggin idiot", I start to roll my eyes a little bit.

The guys track record should earn him a little more respect than that.

Jared
I'm a little drunk, and I tend to not give a damn in these moments. That being said I'll try to tread lightly because, if nothing else, your respect, and your amount of knowledge, is deserving of it.

Still, from what I've read Artest was pretty much on his way to Denver but their ownership got in the middle and nixed the deal due to a personal connection with Klieza. Absolutely right Jared, Nuggets ownership (Stan Kroenke) got involved because Kroenke's son played with Kleiza and thinks highly of him. Apparently he isn't alone. If Kleiza was the deal breaker, and apparently he really was, then I wonder more about Petrie than the Nuggets. To me it makes little sense to add another shooter with Martin, Garcia, Hawes, Miller and Douby already on the roster.

I'll say this though, heck yeah, man, if Brandan Wright and the Warriors trade exception could've been acquired for Artest and an expiring contract (as you proposed) I woulda been very fine with that! It was a dream, and not a reality, sadly. Oh well. A dream is good now & then.

I agree with the point of drafting a superstar with the 15-20 pick (only a couple come to mind--Nash, Jermaine O'Neal and Stockton). That being said who cares if you get anything other than a valuable player out of the pick? Artest may be a superstar talent, but he isn't valued as such by other people around the NBA. There was a time when Rasheed Wallace was a valuable talented, even coveted by the coaches, while he set the NBA record for technicals. I don't think coaches think that highly of Ron Artest period.

It's funny, Pookey... you definitely know you're stuff, and when you succinctly and calmly sum up what you think about the situation (like  in this last post), I don't disagree with you all that much. I appreciate kind comments. It's always nice to know that the rolling of eyes doesn't immediately happen as soon as someone read what I write. That being said I didn't call Petrie an IDIOT. I said his overplaying of the hand with relation to Artest was un-forgivable. It really made no sense, particularly with the looming off-season, that he wouldn't trade Artest for expiring contracts/middle 1st round pick. It made no sense for Denver to give up Kleiza with their only OTHER shooter JR Smith. Petrie tried to have his cake and eat it too, and he ultimately failed in the attempt. His ego got in the way. He deserves to have some egg shoved in his face, especially during a relatively blameless and egg on the face, for his tenure here in Sacramento.

Always enjoy the conversing Jared.

Cheers, Pookey...
Posting (yet another) reasoned argument is appreciated, but doing it while you have a good buzz going is beyond the call of duty! :>)

(I'm gonna try one while stoned and see if I can't fix this impending luxury tax squeeze for the Kings!)

Just for the record though, yep, you did indeed say the non-trade was unforgivable,  and you also speculated that Petrie's ego got in the way in the situation (which is a pretty big speculation, IMO), but you also did in fact pin the "friggin idiot" epithet on Geoff. It was on the "Welcome Back, Ron" diary back on Thursday.

"oh my god I just need to shoot myself, Petrie is a friggin idiot! I hate this!" etc

I remember thinking that you probably just needed to get out and take a walk or something, and it reminded me of how damned frustrating it can be to be a sports fan sometimes.

Junior High School is tough enough by itself, but I'm still not over the emotional scars left by the Giants losing the NLCS to the Pirates in '71. :(

Anyway, have a great day, Pookey.

Clarification
I did call Petrie an idiot; what I meant to wrote, and just didn't after reading that, while I've literally called Petrie an idiot for not trading Artest it's meant in more of an, uh, intellectual term. There is no way anyone can look at Geoff Petrie's overall tenure with the team and not see overall success. Idiot's don't do that sort of thing.

I stand by every comment I've made on Petrie regarding his ego getting in the way though (except the idiot part which was really more or less made in anger and in jest).

You have a great day as well Jared.

Because he can't hit a shot or finish at the rim for the past two weeks?

Just a guess.
