Introducing the Sactown Royalty Hope Alert System

This is based entirely on section214's yeoman work assessing the State of the 2007-08 Season. We'll keep tabs, watching scoreboards and judging moods.
Here, in chart form, is a breakdown of 214's consideration on the probabilities the Kings make the postseason. (We'll assume the West's top five teams -- Phoenix, New Orleans, Dallas, San Antonio and Los Angeles -- won't implode to lottery levels.) And remember, the Kings need to achieve its objective (finishing 25-11) while seeing three other teams meet their doom by finished with the 'required' record or worse.
Sacramento 22-24 25-11 Ask later
Houston 27-20 20-15 Plausible
Portland 27-19 20-16 Plausible
Denver 28-18 19-17 Unlikely
Golden State 29-19 18-16 Maim Baron!
Utah 30-18 17-17 No f'n way
Clearly, the biggest obstacle is finishing 25-11. The second biggest obstacle: Watching Denver, Golden State or Utah falter while Portland and Houston refuse to go on hot streaks.
This is rather bleak, even by 'improbable playoff run' standards.

Cautiously optimistic
This year only.
As long as we make some good changes, not some coolcat trade-for-the-sake-of-trading moves.
And as long as we finish over .500 and keep playing hard.
We play all western conference teams in April, with our last game against the Lakers. Anyone up for being spoilers?

I read it
You're advocating a complete and total shift in the make-up of the team. Petrie doesn't make wholesale changes like that.
And who in the world besides you thinks that the Raptors don't know what kind of player they have in Calderon? Would your trade make them better? No.
Covet Calderon all you want, but I just don't see Toronto not making a huge push to sign him, much less letting him go for what you're offering.

WE NEED ANOTHER FREAKIN' BIG MAN, NOT TO TRADE AWAY THE ONE GOOD ONE WE HAVE.
Ok, I feel better now.

Kings Playoff hopes
I don't know what to expect from this team. Up 44-66 vs. the Hornets is impressive.

perhaps even 25-11?si`m?
I'd love the playoffs, but speaking of being homer...one should stay realistic.I can't see Utah & Golden State tanking it; tho' I'd love it if they did.
As for trades, why trade Miller the way he's playing, & my gut tells me(hey...it could be indigestion, hell if I know)that Bibby will stay, at least for now.
As for Artest, if he wants to opt out at the end of the season, you might as well get something for him. & will someone PLEASE take K-9. Even tho' I'm a dog lover; there are limits....

OK, first...
Now for the bad news... OJ Mayo hasn't declared for the draft yet.
Seriously, guys I understand it's fun to see the team playing so well (it feels much nicer than all that damn losing that's been going on the past couple of seasons), and Reggie is doing a good job, etc.
But isn't the goal to see the KIngs win the NBA championship before you shuffle off this mortal coil? You don't really think that's going to happen with this group, do you?
Do you wanna hang on to Ron-Ron until he implode? Do you think we should stick with Bibby and Miller until their trade value equals that of Shareef's, just for the sake of trying to sneak into the playoffs as the eighth seed?! C'mon.
Let's keep our eyes on the prize, To compete with the Spurs, the Suns, the Mavericks, the Hornets, and now the Lakers in the post-season, we'll need to get bigger up front, and a bit more athletic overall, and waaay better on defense. To do that some pieces are going to have to move.
Things might get tougher before they get better

OK, I don't wanna see Ron Ron implode...
Take Brad. I don't see a reason to trade Brad when he's playing the best ball I've ever seen from him & practically made Wallace & Chandler look...uhmm....not so great. What would you trade him for?Cap room?Someone who's a better "rebounder" when he's also a great passer? One has to think of what is subtracted as well as what is gained for the team, not just the position in question.
& consider the history here...Don't you think that Geoff Petrie knows when to trade the players that are ready for Pasture? That goes for any player. Could be Bibby, could be not, depends on what's in it for us in return.
I like the way Beno is developing at the point; my point about Mike Bibby is that it's not my call.Or yours for that matter. It's G.P's.
Would I like to see more atheletecism?More defense?Sure, who wouldn't?I'd also like to see J-Will on the court more too....(Somewhere an angel would get it's wings, to quote TZ)...:)

EXploding is messy...
Not so messy.
I still don't want to see it, though...
I believe Petrie is the man. My only concern, though, is that other GMs start to re-think any trade he agrees to.
Petrie: "Ok, then, I think we have a deal. Let's run it through the league and..."
Other GM: "Wait. You think it's a good deal? Really? Maybe I need to think about this some. Can I call you next week?"

I'm not sure I totally agree
At first blush, he got a ton of credit for being able to relieve Webber's monster contract, but wasn't able to do much with the individual pieces he received back (one of whom continues to haunt our bench with his presence every night).
Having said that, I'll still put my faith in him to wait for the right deal to come along - but I'm not sure how long we can give him a pass if Bibby/Artest stay on the roster past the trade deadline.

I agree
When Miller is traded then yeah, I'd like to see that position filled by somebody who can play some D and is athletic. I was really pushing for the Kings to land Joakim Noah. We missed him by one pick, but that's the kind of center I'd love to see on the court firing outlet passes to Kevin Martin for a few seasons.
Artest will be moved. So will Bibby, and believe me Rhondda, I have complete faith in Geoff Petrie's ability to make the right moves at the right time. Having said that, I'm pretty sure he's not satisfied with the current roster and is working hard to get us to the next level. When that happens I just hope people will be patient and not get all bent out of shape because they believed this team could compete for the NBA title. It can't.
by Mucho Moss on Feb 4, 2008 8:11 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Surely as it is currently configured...
But about the improvements & what will G.P. do.
If it was just about a player being atheletic, wouldn't Gerald Wallace still be a King?
But increased defensive proficiency & more defensive talent is a must.Look at the Spurs model:not really a team led by one "superstar" but wins the championship anyway...good coaching, a p.g. that's
good with dribble penetration, Timmy et al, & everyone playing 'd', & Horry waking up at the end of the game despite being 105(just kidding, bob, if you're reading this). That's what does it, for sure.
