Friday Footnotes

  • Brad Miller will play tonight.
  • More Joe Kleine, via TrueHoop. Apparently Portland used the unofficially retired Kleine to make a trade work in 2000. Kleine got $1.2 million for doing nothing. Of course, he made about $2.1 million from the Kings over four years... for doing nothing. As a thank you, Kleine sent the Blazers a bunch of ribs and rib products from his restaurant. Which means the Blazers definitely got more bang for the buck than the Kings ever did. (Come on, does he have one more Kleine joke in him? No.)
  • Interesting discussion in pookey's diary, if you've missed it. I'll remind everyone to avoid name-calling, of course. Unless you're calling Grant Napear or Kenny Thomas names.
  • Jermaine O'Neal says Indiana has ongoing trade talks... going on. I still think he's a candidate for 'tarnished superstar Geoff Petrie wants to save'. He'd be, as an often elite defender, a good counterbalance to both Brad Miller and Spencer Hawes, and I think Mike Bibby'd be a good fit (cap-wise and as a player) for Indiana.
  • Kevin Johnson seems to be fixing the problems with his foundation's properties in Oak Park. In other Maloof-friends-in-public-office news, Darrell Steinberg will be the next state Senate President Pro-Tem, and if you've met or followed Steinberg, you smiled when you read that.

Some things
LOL @ section's comment above

Johnson outlined his future plans for living up to his promise of urban renewal in his old neighborhood, including building a 15,000-square-foot Fresh & Easy market at 34th and Broadway. Development of the large, former sausage factory site is considered crucial to revitalizing Broadway's commercial corridor.
At least KJ's got the right idea. Mebbe. (Anybody familiar with Oak Park knows there is 1 grocery store round those parts.)

I don't particularly want O'Neal because:

  1. He's expensive
  2. Shedding Mike & Mikki don't make up for it
  3. Shedding Miller's contract makes more sense
  4. Shaq & Jermaine's injury history make up for a resounding "DOH!" (and maybe more offensive than Jermaine Jackson)
  5. I have a personal vendetta against any player from South Carolina

(Last but not least I don't care about Darrell Steinberg either way. I guess I'm just that partisan to petty personal politic.)

If we traded for Jermaine O'Neal
We should wait until Artest is gone.

I'm not sure what I think about him as a player. He is injured way too much for my taste, but some of that may just be that he's unhappy in his situation. He wouldn't be the first guy to slack off because of that. He's injured now (knee) but expected back before the break.

He'd give us the low-post presence we need, and he's athletic enough, when healthy, to run the floor. He's fairly young, too.

That salary, though. Ouch. I don't see Petrie tying up that much cap space for him, but we'll see. That trade wouldn't make me unhappy at the moment.

Ron Artest: A legend in his own mind.

Jermaine may be young...
But he's got a lot of miles.  Remember that he came out of HS, so add a year or two onto the odometer.

by misterbrister on Feb 8, 2008 9:56 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes, but.
He languished on the bench for what would have been his entire college career.

Here are a few players turning 30 in 2008 (regular season + playoff minutes):

O'Neal -- 22,275 min played
Bibby  -- 26,981 min played (plus 2,200 at Arizona)
Rip    -- 25,634 min played (plus 3,300 at UConn)
Marion -- 27,589 min played (plus 950 at UNLV)
Dirk   -- 30,100 min played

Minutes-wise, he's a young 29. But yes, very tall men break down younger and he has an injury history. Tough call.

Interesting minute breakdown.
I assumed that O'Neil had a lot more miles on him than he does.

JO
What about his knees? How bad are they, really? I'd hate to get him only to have to endure another power forward microfracture rehab.

As far as his attitude, maybe this could be another case for the Geoff Petrie's Home for Talented but Wayward NBA Stars.

Jermaine O'Neal= Ron Artest
Isn't the whole gripe about JO is that when the ball goes into him it never comes out.  Now I like the guy and think he's a good defender, but offensively that would be the end of a motion offense.

defying the laws of physics
What is more likely: escaping the gravitational pull of a black hole or getting the ball back from Artest or O'Neil?

I'm just askin'....

No assist machine, but
J. O'Neil's per 40 for assists is about 3 a game, 1 less than Brad but 2 more than Mikki.

TZ I don't really care
But shouldn't the poll be something like Wright, O'Bryant and Pietrus as the 3 that come back for Artest? I mean you did it with Kleiza/Najera, but what about for the Dubs? (I just point it out because it wouldn't work salary wise. Even though that's what the deal would be + expiring contracts.)

hold on a sec
Joe Kleine has a rib joint? Why haven't I been there yet? And does it have Jerry Reynolds' extra tangy bbq sauce?

Warning: Corny Kleine Joke Below
Pass on JO. Rather not become the Sacramento Pacers, thanks.

Oh, and Joe Kleine doesn't handle the ball. The ball handles Joe Kleine.

K-Mart for JO?
I can see them biting on a bibby/poodle package. But I don't thing JO'd be a good fit for this team. Something about his attitude makes me think he wouldn't fit in well here. That and I could have sworn the plan was to have endless cap space in 2009. I'm not sure what JO's contract is, but trading for him wouldn't really make much sense. Shouldn't we be trading for younger cheaper talent? Like maybe David Friggin' Lee? Come on Zeke, take on Kenny Thomas' contract. You know you want to.

Yeah, Zeke - C'mon!
I hear that Kenny Thomas is very popular with the ladies. Perhaps the two of you could double.

Love ya, TZ.
Is it just me or did I not ADVOCATE nay, PROGNOSTICATE a J. O'Neal trade in a diary not too long ago?

From 'Could They Win it all?'
"...By trading Mike Bibby, any head from the hydra of mediocrity at PF, and a 1st round pick 2008, possibly '09, I think this lineup could make a serious contender out of THESE Kings, this year."

This in, from Kingme18:

"The trade would not work under any circumstances and the Pacers aren't stupid that they'd blindly give O'Neal away for an aging and declining point guard."

Again, KingMe18:

"...Unless you are one of those two, your opinion doesn't really matter. O'Neal dogging it? Give me a break. Provide me some evidence that he's dogging yet.  This team couldn't compete with San Antonio, Dallas or Phoenix with or without O'Neal. Nash, Parker and maybe even Jason Terry would have a field day against Beno Udrih, Mike Bibby, John Salmons.

From Section214(whom I generally respect)

"...And O'Neal is far more valuable than Bibby. Put another way: if we had O'Neal right now would you trade him for Bibby and a mid to late 1st round pick?"

So...what were you sayin' fellas?

The wise man tells you Where you have fallen And where you yet may fall - Invaluable secrets! The world may hate him. But good men love him.
