GAME 48 vs Utah, Preview & Game Thread

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I asked C.B. Jack from My Utah Jazz some questions. He gave me some answers. They follow.

When your GM signed two point guards who couldn't get off the bench in 33-win Sacramento last year, what was your confidence level on a scale of 1-10?

We had seen Price play here at UVSC in college. I think a little part of all Utah Basketball fans wanted to see him in a Jazz uniform. We also remembered "the dunk" from last year, so we did have some confidence in him. As for Hart? No confidence at all. In fact, all of us here at My Utah Jazz throw up a little in our mouth when he checks into the game. Confidence level coming into the season: 4

If Malone-to-Stockton couldn't win a title, is there any chance for this core?

I do think there is a chance for this core group of players. While it may not be this year, I do think they have a good 2-3 years window in front of them. As long as Boozer and Williams stick around, I feel like we will always be in the division and conference battle. It would take a favorable seed in the playoffs to make it back to the WCF this year. If SA and the Lakers can beat each other up then we have a chance. Those are the two teams all Jazz fans really don't want to face in the playoffs.

Which long-term Western contender scares you more heading into your team's prime, the Lakers or the Blazers?

Excellent question. At this point I would say the Lakers because we will see them at full force shortly. The Blazers are also a young (younger than the Jazz) up and coming team. This season they are the Jazz of last year, coming out of nowhere. I would rather face the Blazers in a 7 game series than the Lakers

(He also asked me some questions, which I answered.)

The bleeding will not stop, so get the gauze and Glenlivet. And, er, go Kings.

I'll take the Kings to cover AND win the game.  I'll also take the over.

I'm not too confident about this one
I think Kevin will have a good game, but I think it's still pretty likely we'll see "Step-back Ron" and "Chucker Bibby". Let's hope not. Go Kings!

Fun watching him play
Shawes has talent. I think Jerry mentioned something interesting about Shawes. He can score with either and PASS with either hand. Not many players can do that at any position let alone a big.

Just wanted to say that Spencer is showing signs of growth. I like it. (It also makes Brad Miller a tad more expendable doesn't it?)

Good and Bad 1st half
Kmart 8-11 for 22 pts. - Good
13 TOs - Bad
Bibby only 4 shots and 6 asts. - Good
Boozer 17 pts. 6 boards - Bad
Kings out rebounding Jazz 21-14 - Good
Artest only 6 shots - Good
Kmart cut on nose - Bad
Hawes 9 mins. played - Good
Cisco hurt - Bad
Kings 13 asts on 20 made baskets - Good
Salmons still giving nothing off the bench - Bad
Kings shooting 56% - Good
Last 4-5 mins having lead cut from 13 to 1 - Bad

If we can keep good Bibby, good Artest and cut down the TOs we can win this baby.

Salmons
>>Salmons still giving nothing off the bench - Bad<<

He sure came alive in crunch time. I especially liked that sequence where he blocked Harpring, then went coast to coast.

Quincy was also huge. It was fun to watch that Udrih-Salmons-Quincy-Miller-Hawes or Mikki lineup at the end of the game and equally nice that Reggie left them on the floor to win it. Great win for the Kings.

Yep Salmons was huge in the 4th
I mention down below that getting him time without Artest, Bibby and Martin may be the answer.

With Artest: Kings are 17-14.
Without Artest: Kings are 6-11.

Kings also now 13-8 with both Artest and Martin in the lineup.

all those games with him
also had KMart and Miller.

Some of those games without didn't have KMart either.

But you are right - he's a great talent. I should have also included Bibby in my criticism. As "leaders", their mental state shouldn't allow off-nights. That the team does is a failure on their part (and K-Marts, he should assert that desire to win).

Mikki Moore in the skills challenge! - LPA

by iashwash on Feb 8, 2008 10:07 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not true
>>all those games with him
also had KMart and Miller.<<

The Kings are 4-6 in games with Artest, but not Martin. Those occured Dec. 7-26 and included wins over Milwaukee twice, the Nets and 76ers (the team's first road win) and two losses each to Boston and Denver as well as the Wizards and Clippers. Then Artest missed the next nine games and Kevin returned two games before that.

By the way, I was just rereading your "Cap Space" diary. I had read it before, but not closely, more of a skim job. Very interesting in the context of the stuff we were kicking around in the Pookey diary last night.

In reading that list of nine free agents I noticed Boozer and Okur and thought of how Utah did not really miss much of a beat in reloading after Malone and Stockton left, but they definitely used a combination of approaches to rebuild their team. That's another interesting case study.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Feb 8, 2008 11:39 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My bad
I realized a bit after I posted it that KMart was gone for some of those games, but I thought it was only 2 or three, so didn't think it'd make a statistical difference. Thanks for the fact-check, for some reason tonight I was too lazy.

However, there is alot of variability (those early games didn't have Beno, and K-9 was being played, and Shawes wasn't being played) to accurately put the responsibility of successes on any specific player - especially when we're working within a half-season window. Any team not utilizing its best talent is usually worse for the present.

The cap-space diary - the ensuing conversation between pookey and I also develops the argument further, and draws unique conclusions.

I agree: The Jazz is another interesting case study. They took an initial gamble that at first-sighting looked like it failed (Boozers injuries maddening Utah fans). In some ways, they got lucky (that high pick helped them out a bit, too). Even then, they still had some tough times in between. What is interesting is that they went into rebuilding phase almost immediately (they didn't have much of a choice). They got rid of the Big O when Stock and Malone left (and a couple other players whose names evade me now), and then started looking to fill their needed positions (via draft and free agency) and stuck with those players that they chose. Constructing a timeline of their signings/player-leavings** would be a very useful visual tool, I'm too tired to sit around and construct it.
**(what is the actual word for that?)

It would seem that accepting fate and jumping into rebuilding speeds up the process, rather than trying to rebuild-and-win. Portland is another great example of a team that just went all-out with the rebuilding; let's see what happens with the Supersonics (though their arena talks might affect the issue) and the Timberwolves (who are especially interesting because of [something else mentioned in that diary] the fact that so much of their young talent will be looking for deals at the end of this season. 76ers though, are a complete fkjob managerial-wise, and should also be interesting to watch - if only to serve as warning to the Maloofs.

We could play with this idea more - my knowledge of the present NBA is significantly better than my knowledge of anything going on three-years before, so if you can suggest some teams that were rebuilding 4-5 years ago, we could take a closer look (suns after the J-Kidd trade?). An example of the opposite would also be necessary (Orlando forcing the issue with Hill trade, and thus not really rebuilding - or trying to rebuild too quickly?). Clearly we'd need more.

If you're game, I'd love to walk through this kind of discussion. I'm more privy to the how-were-they-utilizing-young-talent side of the question, and you're more interested in the well-how-did-they-get-that-star side of the question. Together, the two issues could bring about some altogether interesting points.

You are going to drive yourself nuts with that
I think we get that Artest is a solid NBA talent.  But this team has had so many injuries and missed games by various players that numbers like the ones you display don't mean a damn thing.

The clunker the other night was one of the worst games the team played all year, and I believe Mr. Artest was indeed playing.

Just my opinion - I think you would be better served quoting plus/minus numbers for Artest (which are generall pretty good) than team won/loss records.

Disclaimer: I am anti-Bibby.

In other threads
I've looked at Artest with Martin, without Martin, Martin with and without, team with- without Beno, team with all three and Miller, etc. Of course it is just a snapshot, but I think it does add something to the discussion.

The team without both Artest and Martin has been terrible, and the team with Beno has been terrible. They've also lost all the games Brad's missed.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Feb 9, 2008 12:03 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

be realistic
this team rarely blows teams out. i know, it's just a classic case of wishful thinking. i'll take three squeakers as well. a W is a W. and a 3-0 road trip would mean we can stop talking about .500 and set a new goal. like....5 games over .500 (gasps)

What makes a rebound count as a team rebound?
Mikki Moore in the skills challenge! - LPA

by iashwash on Feb 8, 2008 10:02 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There has to be a rebound or
a TO or a made basket for every possession change. So team rebounds are usually things like a shot that bounces up and hits the shot clock, or air balls out of bounds. Things where you can't give the rebound to a particular player. At least that's how I understand it.

by Kfan in Korea on Feb 8, 2008 10:05 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah -

And, yes, this is a pointless statement:

Josh Smith is one athletic mother. And he's 22. He needs to focus hard in the off-season on increasing his toolkit. He's only a reliable open-three and a post-game away from being all-NBA level.

Add him to my pipe-dreams. Though Al-Horford is no slouch either. And Joe Johnson.
