The Benching
This break from the hardwood is a relief, as I am a chicken and my head has been removed, and we have plenty of talk about based on the events of the weekend. While Monday was spent basking in the glow of the "Shock & Hawes" game, it's time to discuss Ron Artest. More directly, it is time to discuss the lack of Ron Artest in the fourth quarter Sunday.
From the cheap seats, we can look at the benching in one of two ways.
- Theus is being honest: He didn't feel like Ron was in a good flow. Artest had shot 6-14, had more turnovers than assists, and rarely shot closer than 17 feet away. Clearly, on offense, Bad Ron had suited up. But his defense was between good and real good; he had four steals and was chatty and active. In a game where a few stops would make a world of difference, you'd sacrifice a couple bad FGAs for Ron's fourth-quarter defense.
- Theus saw something in Ron's theatrics he didn't like. Remember Utah? Ron reacted to the crowds cat-calls and went a little ballistic. It was the undoing of the team. The offense sputtered as Ron made himself the focus; the defense wilted as Ron became more concerned with making a scene than making a play. Sunday night in L.A., it began again. Ron hit the floor upon drawing a charge; he wriggled around like a 4-year-old on Pixie Stix and pop. He was edging towards being demonstrative, and Demonstrative Ron earns technical fouls and lashes out by taking setback 23-footers.
When Garcia fouled out, John Salmons -- not Artest -- came in the game.
Salmons had been no great shakes on either end. We knew Kobe Bryant'd have the ball; Artest seems more apt to deal with such a scenario (in theory). But Theus called on Salmons.
I'll introduce a third theory, one based in nothing more than theory: Theus was pissed about Artest's absence from the Clippers and Wolves games, pissed the Kings lost both, and wanted to put Ron in his place.
You know what? It doesn't matter which theory is the right one. All show good judgment from Theus. Whether he made the decision based on basketball or based on the team dynamic, it was the right decision. Vastly encouraging.
(Also encouraging: The decision to put Brad Miller back in the game for the last offensive possession. Miller might be the most important King on offense, in terms of improving everyone else. And getting the ball to Udrih in the right place certainly helped. Two wins for Theus!)

I hope it was the third...
Again the second theory has never stopped theus from playing Artest before either.
The third, while it may cause some issues later on for RT, would mean that he does have some balls to keep artest in check and let him know that he is not above the team.(well I guess they all say this, but this one to an extreme)
The only thing I don't understand is why Ron didn't seem to be bothered by the benching.
It's so hard to guess what's going on in tha chemically unbalanced head of his.

Hmm
- the entire season
- Kevin Martin's poor play of late
- losing a game he didn't play in
- not getting upset at a 4th-quarter benching (but rather celebrating on the court and crowing about the team accomplishment to the press)

Did I...
I have never questioned a player's injury. It's one of the things which made me despise Grant Napear (when he question Bobby Jackson's toughness).

seriously
this is the same guy who constantly questions his coaches and has been known to not run plays when they are not for him.
Cmon man, nobody's blaming anybody, just calling him a selfish player.

Was it Ron's idea?
Both Jim and Mikki also pointed out that Ron cheered the team on during the fourth quarter. Mikki also said that Ron was a big fan of Hawes and spent time before and after practices working with him.

Imagine That

Kind of throws a kink in the "team dissension" theory. I don't suppose Amick or Voisin caught that news flash.
Otherwise, this topic is so yesterday's news.
Oh, wait a minute, it's actually the day before yesterday's news. I guess that big Channing Frye "scoop" got in the way of a more timely rehash.
Been there and done that in the game story and recap after the Lakers game, not much to add, but it's nice to see Mikki speak up. And it's nice to see the Kings get a big win with their youngsters taking charge.
It will be nice when we get to the point where we don't need to point out the "with Ron, without Ron" records.

Once again,
Paragraphs 1 and 2 - great info, thanks for bringing it to the table. I did not hear Koz that night so I truly appreciate the insight.
Paragraph 3 - I cannot find the words "team dissension" anywhere in TZ's post, the Bee link, or anyone's subsequent comments.
Paragraph 4 - My guess (and it's just a guess) is that you would love talking about "yesterday's news" if it included Ron hitting a big shot and then denying Kobe at the end of the game.
Paragraph 5 - Thanks for taking a swipe at TZ and me in the same paragraph, a new coolcat record. I'm very sorry that we subject you to this tripe but we had to work very hard to cover for the lack of a brilliant and memorable coolcat diary.
Paragraph 6 - "Been there and done that..." son, right now I know exactly how you feel.
Paragraph 7 - Physician, heal thyself!
Once again you had me, you lost me.

Response to 'Lost in Sactown'
Both Amick and Voisin have alluded to it as well as posters here in previous threads.
>>My guess (and it's just a guess) is that you would love talking about "yesterday's news"<<
Everything we talk about is generally old news anyway being rehashed, so I probably should have given you a pass. I just thought it could have been posted more quickly to be relevant, and it had been discussed in the game and recap threads. But Artest banter sells on any day, even when it has to compete with Channing Frye exposes, so I guess you got me there.
>>Thanks for taking a swipe at TZ and me<<
I know, life's a bitch when the shoe's on the other foot, isn't it? Anyway, it was all in good fun. I know you have a sense of humor somewhere under that facade.
>>we had to work very hard to cover for the lack of a brilliant and memorable coolcat diary.<<
Nice swipe back. I guess that makes us even.
>>Once again you had me, you lost me.<<
That will never exactly knock me off my chair in disbelief.

Hmmm,
To recap, "old news" is OK when your reference it, not OK when anybody else talks about something that happened within the last 48 hours.
Got it.

Not sure that's a new angle
Don't forget, I'm the guy that got ripped earlier this year for making a list of 10 or so GM's I thought were better than Petrie. And I got hammered for putting Kupchak up there (and that was pre-Gasol).
/pats own back
Seriously, I think Petrie is a good GM, but the genuflecting some Kings fans do is ridiculous. The two things I think he needed to do - finish up the Webber trade by dealing the parts he got in return, and trade Ron-Ron before the deadline, have been miserable failures.
He did get Beno though, and that's a credit to the ledger. But if he's unable to resign him in the offseason, especially due to Artest's continued presence on the roster, there will be plenty of vitriol thrown his direction.

I agreed with you on the failure of Petrie
This is a complicated muddled issue. Maybe it requires a diary in the next week or so (if I can get around to it).
Last but not least you were one person who said Petrie has failed mightily. I was willing to give him time. Now I'm totally in the failure camp. And this isn't because he wasn't able to dump Kenny Thomas.

Ron Artest is growing up?
I love Ron 75% of the time, that being the 75% of the time that he actually suits up and plays.
