Screw the Kings ... It's Time for Some March Madness
I've got to get my priorities straight.
No more worries about whether Kevin can become more consistent or if Ron is taking good shots. I've got better things to care about than whether Beno is a top 30 NBA point guard or if Salmons is on non-starters suicide watch. Will Mikki ever grow a pair of hands or will Brad ever grow a pair, period? I just don't care right now.
That's because ...
It's bracket time.
Lay it on me, folks. Give me your upset specials. Give me the $5 million perfect bracket.
I've created a group at Yahoo! Sports called Sactown Madness. If you are 18 and in the continental US and agree to give up your first-born child, you can enter for a chance to win $10,000 if you pick the best bracket. That goes up to $5 million if you have the perfect bracket. And it will track the standings and determine who from this board has picked the best bracket --aka "bragging rights."
I am looking for UCLA, Texas, Kansas and Tennessee in the Final Four. I think Michael Beasley will start planning his NBA career after a one-and-done loss to USC. The Georgia bubble will burst, and West Virginia wil be this year's Cinderella. Gonzaga will be yesterday's news after their first game.
Agree? Disagree? Give me your best shot. They don't include the play-in game Tuesday in the contest, so all entries are due by the tip-off of the first game Thursday morning.
Click the link above and join the group. Here is the rest of the info you need to join:
Private Group Name: Sactown Madness.
Group ID#: 133218.
Password: Sactown.
After that, just fill out your bracket. Best of luck to all who take part.

Make that 5
Thanks for setting this up, CC. I was looking forward to watching the games in a bracket free environment...maybe next year.

Six entries so far
When the games start you will be able to see all the other brackets, and that's when the real taunting can begin ("You picked Duke? DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKE? You've got to be kidding.")
This should be a lot of fun.

The winner
For example, if coolcat wins, you would have to respond to him in any draft related threads in the following manner: "I agree with the esteemed college expert and draft authority coolcat." Or, "with all due repect, I cannot agree with esteemed college expert and draft authority coolcat."
And maybe throw in a Peaches T-Shirt with the inscription on the back reading, "I won. The rest of you are idiots."

Drafting vs. Picking Brackets
Drafting is a crapshoot. Kevin Love could be the next Larry Bird or the next Joe Kleine. Adam Morrison emerges as a lottery pick when others saw him as a second-round pick at best. I could go on and on.
Brackets, on the other hand, are basically a math exercise. Higher seeds from better conferences with more wins have a better chance to emerge as champions based on past results. Cinderella rarely stays at the ball past the Sweet 16, and the odds are stacked against her getting that far.
Since 1979, only 43 teams not seeded No. 1 or No. 2 have made it to the Final Four in 29 years.
In the meantime, 45 No. 1 seeds have made it to the Final Four, with 15 winning it all.
There have been 28 No. 2 seeds in the Final Four since 1979, with six of them becoming champions.
There is some great NCAA Tournament data to slice and dice at this site.
Most champions also come from one of the top six conferences (Pac 10, Big 10, Big East, ACC, SEC, Big 12) and enter the tournament with at least 25 wins. Eleven of the top 16 seeded teams meet that criteria this year: UCLA, Texas, Kansas, North Carolina, Tennesee, Duke, Georgetown, Stanford, Pitt, Wisconsin and Vanderbilt. Michigan State, a five seed in the South, and the East's No. 8 seed, Indiana, also boast those credentials.
Only Louisville (twice) and UNLV have come from outside the top conferences to claim the title since 1979.

How the hell
Still in it to win it, get my grin on and sing my victory song all hickory day long.
Tomorrow, everyone's going to see the biggest jump from 8th->1st ever. Book it.

Good numbers
That's a huge key to winning these things - not just making the correct picks, but not having your Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, or god forbid Final Four picks eliminated early in the tourney.
It's a new day, let's see what suprises await!

Anyone wondering about upsets
As an aside, who watched the Indiana game? They have a kid on that roster that's built like Oliver Miller (if Oliver Miller had consumed a late-vintage Shawn Kemp).
