The View From Section214, 3/18
Brought sis214 to the Warriors game tonight, a tradition for over 20 years.
Pregame
"We Believe" shirts are all over the place. Other Warriors shirts include Davis, Biedrens, J-Rich, Ellis, Rick Barry, Barnes, Mullin, Jackson, and one Nellie shirt (#13).
Hawes and Udrih out but Salmons is suited up.
About 20-25% Dubs fans, and they warmly welcome their team.
We counter their introductions with the eight most terrifying words known to man: " A six three guard from Charleston, Anthony Johnson!"
Jackson and Johnson share a big pregame hug. I forgot that they were teammates in Indy.
16,000 fans, including Warriors fans on both sides of me. I ask them when we were good and used to travel down to Oakland, how obnoxious were we on a scale of 1-10. They say 4. I ask the same in regards to Laker fans. They say 11.
1st Quarter
The AJ-oop to Martin!
Quick hook for Monta Ellis.
The Warrior fans are cool so far but I sooo want to win this game.
Artest and Jackson are mixing it up pretty good.
It looks like we will have no answer for Baron Davis tonight, 12 for the quarter.
2nd Quarter
Dubs fans are impressed by Douby's quickness.
Dubs fans are amused by Artest insisting on a technical.
Garcia is actually running the point while Douby plays the two.
More props to the Warrior fans. Compared to Laker fans they actually know and watch the game.
Artest and Davis are now yakking after Martin gets hit in the face. Ron may not see the finish of this one.
OK, I have to admit these AJ-oops to Kevin Martin are fun.
They are going to need to work on that rim after the assault of Andris Biedrens' free throws.
Fun, fun, fun half of basketball.
Halftime
Kids Karate, and defense is played for the first time this evening.
3rd Quarter
Davis now covering Martin.
Artest, Miller, Jackson and Davis are all squawking. This is truly whine country.
A 3 by AJ and another angel gets wings.
Anthony Johnson - Professional Basketball Player.
3:33 left in the quarter, Kings by 19, Warrior fans seated and cranky.
40 points for the quarter (for us!!!). I'm tingly.
4th Quarter
Lead cut to 11 with 8 minutes left. Uh-oh.
Can someone explain to me why we have gotten so fancy with the passing all of a sudden?
8 point lead with 6 minutes left and the Dubs fans are back into it.
AJ looks like he's out of gas.
"Let's Go Warriors" chant is quickly drowned out by Kings fans.
You want slaw with that?!? Mikki rocks the rim on a sweet pass from AJ.
Davis misses the illegal defense free throw, then he tries to put it up again, only to be blocked by Brad. Then he tries again, and Brad swats it away. Then the Dubs get a delay of game warning. Ha!
Big ovation for Brad upon fouling out.
The gold files out of ARCO first tonight.
Kings win!!!
Postgame
An incredible performance by the starting five. Double doubles for Brad, Mikki and AJ, and Martin and Artest both big from the field. If these guys are only playing for pride at this point, their effort tonight said a lot about them. Well done, fellows.

Nothing like a little bad blood to fuel a rivalry.

You sure?
This could be more about the Dubs defense than anything else.

Anthony Johnson
I think Beno is a decent passer, and a decent defender. He certainly shut down Calderon and TJ.
Who would you rather have at the point next year than Beno?

Derrick Rose

Disagree
Yeah, I know, Chris Paul. But NO wasn't going anywhere anyway, and they had nothing to lose by making him the starter, being perpetual cellar dwellers.
Name two others in the past fifteen years, and we'll talk.

How about
Now I guess it depends on how you define things - is it really so important that they are game changers in their rookie season? It's not like we will be contending for a few years in the West anyways.

The great PG debate
I don't see a rookie being an upgrade from Beno, who has shown a marked improvement this year in being able to run the team. And I'd like to see our young guys benefit from having someone like that on the floor.
Draft a point guard? Sure. But have him back up Beno instead of starting. Let him have a more gradual learning curve than tossing him on the floor after a couple weeks of camp and saying, "Here you go, bud. It's your team." That would probably be setting him up to fail, and fail badly.
In asking about PGs before, I was asking about ones that have been difference makers in their first year. I don't believe that we're that far from making a good run in the play-offs if we can get a good PF in the off-season.
We have great pieces surrounding that sucking chest wound that is our power forward position.
No offence to Mikki. I love him, and I'll love him more coming off the bench.

Agreed
You never know what Petrie is thinking though - we may end up drafting another swingman.

Otis a wise sage you be
(And I don't care if teams have growing pains with rookie PG's. That's part of the deal with that position. Gary Payton was a slow starter too. John Stockton didn't start for 3 years.)

Future Prospects
We have great pieces surrounding that sucking chest wound that is our power forward position.
That assumes Artest returns to play next season. Otherwise, we have two sucking chest wounds to fill. It's probably still too optimistic even if Ron does come back.
If you use a 1-5 ranking system, you might say the Kings have two 2s (Martin, Artest), two 3s (Miller, Udrih) and a 5 (Mikki). That might be optimistic or pessimistic depending on individual takes on those players.
If Artest is gone, you drop a few notches at SF. I assume we are in agreement there, but maybe not.
So if San Antonio is your measuring stick with its three 1s surrounded by a supporting cast of role players, you're probably optimistic to think we can compete with the top dogs in the West.
In 2-3 years it could be a different dynamic. If that's your time frame, it can make sense going with a top young point guard, particularly if you think they have the tools to eventually become one of the best at that position.
Besides, we may not have a choice if Beno gets a higher offer than we have currently pencilled in.

Losing Artest
First of all, Salmons and / or Garcia would fill the 3 slot more capably than anyone is currently filling the 4.
Secondly, Salmons and Garcia total a $7 million investment compare to the $24 million that we're slated to have invested at the 4.
by section214 on Mar 20, 2008 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Salmons/Garcia vs. Mikki/Hawes
If we improve at the power forward spot, we'll have even more than the current $24 million invested there, and the SF will become the weak spot of the team, although not by a wide margin.
If Artest scoots and we only get a modest upgrade at the 4, then we are down to one second-tier star and a bunch of average players. That's not going to get it done in the short term.
Then again, I don't think we are going too far in the next couple of years anyway. Let's start assembling the pieces for 2009 and beyond.
by coolcatreportdotcom on Mar 20, 2008 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hawes is a 4?
Salmons played well as a starter. Not to Artest's level but certainly capable. They could give 48 legitimate minutes at the 3.
Moore plays capably for someone who should not be starting. That's roughly 30 minutes of reserve caliber play.
I just don't see the comparison. You do.

Kings answer to "we believe" shirt
And yeah, I know defense is a dirty word in Golden State but considering AJ did a better job defensively it's still definatly something to look at. The better AJ does, the less money we have to spend on Beno if we choose to retain his services. Personally I think we Beno doesn't have to be that high of a priority, but then again I'm just happy to see a Point Guard actually at least pretend to know what defense is.
