Maybe the Maloofs Saved Adelman's NBA Career
A survey of Ron Artest's NBA head coaches.
Chicago Tim Floyd Yes Coaching USC
Chicago Bill Cartwright Yes Nets assistant
Indiana Isiah Thomas Yes Heheh
Indiana Rick Carlisle Yes Unemployed
Sactown Rick Adelman Kinda Coach of the Yr
Sactown Eric Musselman Yes Unemployed
Sactown Reggie Theus No Having brunch
Carlisle will get another job in the NBA, and Theus looks like he'll stick awhile. Remember: Adelman wasn't fired. The Maloofs just decided not to attempt to re-sign him. Perhaps he should be glad he did not re-sign. It's hard to imagine he'd be in a better position today having coached the Kings last season.
(O HAI! Here is a debate between Dan Shanoff and I over whether the NBA is becoming a niche sport.)

Couple things before I depart noisily
I'm not sure why you chose to point out that Ron Artest's coaches haven't stunk around. Other than the few years with Carlisle, did Artest play on a playoff level team in Chicago? (This is by no means a means of support for Ron. I just think it's a chance to pile on. I'm not really in favor of that either.)

Blame it
Going to be quite a few of those going forward.
If anything, Artest's performance to lead the team into the playoffs in 2005-06 probably made it harder for the Kings to part with Adelman, or at least gave him a more plausible reason to be retained.
The Bulls stunk and had a bevy of young players, including Ron, Brad Miller, Elton Brand and Tyson Chandler. They won less than 40 games in the 2 1/2 seasons Artest was there. Not too many coaches are going to hang onto their jobs with that kind of record.
Larry Bird hated Isiah and the feeling was mutual. Larry Legend won out.
Musselman was a complete disaster. Need I say more?
Carlisle's teams at Indiana were 126-78 with Artest on the team and 45-69 after Artest was traded, including a 35-47 record in Carlisle's last season before he was fired. There's no doubt the brawl and Artest's trade demand and the team getting rid of him and Steven Jackson for soft but safe players sealed Carlisle's fate.

After Artest Left

You could argue that Bird's crappy trades caught up with Carlisle. Maybe Bird should have been the one to step down.
Overall, Carlisle has a good track record, and he'll be pacing an NBA sideline again in the near future.

After Peja got there
So we got Artest, and the Pacers got, essentially, no player in return.
by LeaguePassAddict on Mar 25, 2008 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wrong Number
Peja missed only the first game with the Pacers after the trade, then played in the Pacers last 40 games in 2005-2006, averaging more than 36 minutes a game and 19.5 points a game. The Pacers were 20-20 in the games Peja played, with an injury to Jermaine O'Neal not helping matters.
Peja did miss four of six playoff games in a 4-2 series loss to New Jersey and only averaged 11 points in the two games he did play.
He then signed a $64-million, five-year deal with the Hornets. It was a sign-and-trade deal in which the Pacers got the rights to Andrew Betts, a European player who has never played for the Pacers or in the NBA.

If you want to be a "Pollution" Cop
by coolcatreportdotcom on Mar 25, 2008 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
All I'm saying
For example, I could look at your post and say, "Didn't they get a trade exception from New Orleans that helped them sign Al Harrington, too?" Or I could say, "You idiot. Check your facts. You forgot the trade exception that they got that allowed them to sign Al Harrington, too." I would use the 1st example if I wanted to talk about the topic, and I would use the 2nd example if I were insecure and felt the constant need to prove my own perceived superiority.
Even on the numerous occasions that you bring good information to the table you have a tendency to inflame people with your delivery. I wasn't trying to be a "pollution" cop. You made a great point with great information. I just can't figure out why you feel it necessary to "pants" others while making your point. It's too bad. I find you quite insightful when you stay on topic.

Double Standard
I could come up with numerous posts where you've done exactly that, Section. So, please, let's not be a total hypocrite here.
It wouldn't have surprised me if you had "pantsed" me even harder than I did with LPA if I had made her post.
That said, I didn't really mean to rain on her parade as much as that came out, so I'll accept that criticism and move on.
And I'll accept the added info you brought to the table about the Pacers in your backhand manner. Good stuff.
by coolcatreportdotcom on Mar 25, 2008 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
really?
Not trying to add fuel to the fire, but I've only seen section (jokingly) degrade himself.
Also, I don't understand the statement: "It wouldn't have surprised me if you had "pantsed" me even harder than I did with LPA if I had made her post." I figure there's a typo in ther somewhere, I just don't know what. Not trying to be insulting, I'm just confused. Ahhhhh! "If I had made that post." Oh, ok. maybe. I know I would have tried to pwn you ;-)
Though, I'm assuming "I didn't really mean to rain on her parade as much as that came out, so I'll accept that criticism and move on" is some sort of pseudo-apology-without-losing-face-since-apologizing-clearly-means-you-are-a-failure-and-thus-can't- be-done-under-any-circumstances. The added throw-in of "backhanded manner" is also just as tasty.
But I'm no angel either, so whatev.

The CoolCat Chip
From what I can tell the Cool Cat Report is an investment newsletter (in the financial services industry if you will) so I am assuming Mr CoolCat is either Mr. Kennedy, the author of said report, or someone who works for him. While I don't know if there is a finance "culture" per se in Sanger California (home to CoolCat Report headquarters) I do know a bit about Wall Street culture; I work on Wall Street--literally. And I'll tell you, Mr. CoolCat's demeanor--the snide comments, the belittling--is the norm in the financial world. It's a bred behavior. When I first started working on Wall Street, it drov eme crazy, Someone would say something to me like what CoolCat says on a regular basis and I'd shake with rage. I even got in some really nasty arguments with people where I said things about that person and that person's family that my mother would disown me for saying. And I would always feel terrible later. Guilt ridden binge drinking often ensued. Don't get me wrong, I think people deserve their just do. But I care more about my inner peace than I do about delivering retribution to some crass bafoon for hurting my feelings. So, I went looking for some advice on how to deal with insults which I found in the five points that follow:
1. Don't stoop to the other's level
2. Don't do that which will exacerbate the situation even if the motivation is idealistic.
3. Rebuke in private.
4. Know to whom you are talking. Don't waste your time and spin your wheels with people who don't have the capacity to hear you.
5. Remember that we cannot be responsible for another's behavior but we are always accountable for our own.
I hope others in this faceless community find these points useful.
Be well.

Aaahhh....
Thats one of me favorites! J/K (sorta)
Your analysis makes sense, because Wall Steeters (MPMW) also kmow that you can "prove" anything with statistics, in any direction. I dont mean that as a poke at coolcat, his stats are normally very telling, but anything can be "proven" if you look at the numbers right.

I suppose
I checked the stats, and I had remembered it wrong. It wasn't until he got to NO that he had back surgery. My bad.
My bad, also, in responding to Coolcat. We, for some reason <cough>artest<cough> have a somewhat antagonistic relationship, and I had decided at some point during my self-imposed two week exile during which I communed with Tibetan monks and subsisted only on sour Jelly Bellys, that I would refrain from responding in the future because it always seemed to lead to flaming.
So I responded in haste, and mistakenly, then turn my back for a couple of hours to make dinner (chicken enchiladas, homemade guacamole, etc. can you tell I'm still hungry?) and feed the SavageBeast, and come back to this.
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to start anything. Especially since now that I've broken my own vow, I have to send 18 lbs of popcorn flavored Jelly Bellys to Tibet.
Those monks take their vows seriously.

Tim Floyd
"Floyd moved to the NBA as the Bulls' director of operations in the summer of 1998. But soon after when head coach Phil Jackson stepped down and Michael Jordan departed, Floyd took over as head coach for portions of four years (1999-2002) as the club began a major rebuilding process with a young roster. Floyd was hired at a time when the NBA was getting younger and the Bulls wanted a coach who had a track record of developing young players. In fact, two of Floyd's Bulls teams were among the youngest ever in the NBA.
After coaching the Bulls, Floyd took the coaching experience and valuable lessons he learned in Chicago with him to the NBA's Hornets. In his one season as the New Orleans' head coach (2004), he led them to a 41-41 record, and a trip to the playoffs."
Floyd has had good success in the college ranks, and that's probably a better fit for him than the NBA.

Adelman Was Lucky
The Kings are stuck in a rut because they have a pile of lousy contracts on the books and the Maloofs don't want to add more fuel to the fire.
Add the injuries and rebuilding trade of Bibby, and it's doubtful Adelman could have done much more with this bunch than Reggie has.
If Adelman had hung around, he probably would have been fired at the end of this season if not sooner, and that next gig would have been a little harder to come by.
If you want Artest to be the fall guy for this mess, that's fine, but I think Petrie and the Maloofs are the guys on the hook at the moment. And they have no place to hide.
