Artest Fined For Accusing the Coaches of Not Believing in Magic

I think all my personal hand-wringing is depleted. In case yours is not:

Kings coach Reggie Theus fined small forward Ron Artest $5,000 for comments he made after Sunday's win over Miami, according to a source close to the team.

On Sunday, Artest questioned Theus for how he coached the Kings' loss at Miami last Tuesday, wondered if the coaching staff shared his desire to make the playoffs.

Theus declined to discuss the fine, but said making comments in the media that are deemed "detrimental" to the team violates his team policy.

"We don't make comments about other players and staff in the (news)paper," Theus said. "We don't do it. Not (comments) that would be deemed detrimental."

The Free Parking space on Kingsopoly now has $15,000 on it. Come on, snake eyes.

Sam Amick suspects it's a 100% face-saving ploy for Theus. Let's hope Ron understands that clearly.

UPDATE: I put things -- this whole convoluted, post-deadline mess -- as succinctly as possible for FanHouse.

A graph displaying how we felt about Artest last year compared to this year. Oh hey look, we still think he's insane. What's that spike at the very end? Oh, that's how insane we think he is for mentioning a sub-30 win team and the playoffs in the same sentence.

Interesting nugget from Amick
Emphasis mine:
If Artest hadn't been fined, then Theus would lose even more credibility in that realm.
The phrasing would suggest Theus has already lost some credibility with the players.

But these are the eggshells that must be walked upon when you invest your future in Artest. And that's not a dig, it's just the reality of the type of personality you're dealing with.

I've always liked Artest's confidence, he thinks whatever team he's on is going to win the whole enchilada. But the reality is that we are not making the playoffs in the West, period. So this team's priority should be to analyze the young talent on the roster first, and win games second.

Maybe we could trade Artest to the Raiders
Artest for the Silver and Black's #1 pick. Davis is just crazy enough to go for it. Does that work within the trading runles Pookey?

i'm of the pro-ron camp
but he needs to realize that win or lose, his play and attitude are going to determine his future in the nba and comments that attack the coaches desire to win are useless for any cause.

wasn't it larry bird who fired up his team by saying they played like girls or played too soft after a loss, never bring the coaching staff into question. that is unless said team happens to be coached by eric musselman.

I'm amazed that I'm not amazed
Ron Artest - where the outrageous is commonplace.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I like Ron Artest, and I hope that he winds up somewhere where he can be very successful.

I think back to the time that Ron applied at Circuit City so that he could get the employee discount, and I wonder how he would fared as a CC employee had he gotten the job.

How many managers would he have gone through? How much would they have put up with, even if he were the most talented salesperson?

Would he have retained his job through the domestic and dog abuse situations?

What would the reaction have been had he questioned the motivation of his boss in front of the other employees, especially after missing a meeting because he stayed out too late the night before?

At some point Cicuit City would have to determine that the benefits of Ron's sales skills were not worth the headaches and distractions, wouldn't they?

And after all of that, would he lament that the problem is that he does not feel the love from the customers?

I'm not trying to draw a direct parallel here. I have the physical and mental tools to work at Circuit City and I certainly do not have the physical and mental tools to work in the NBA.

Perhaps it is that disparity between the NBA world and the real world that causes many fans to tire of Ron. That is, most of us work pretty hard at our jobs, do things that our bosses tell us to do even if we don't always agree, realize that we are not impossible to replace, and understand that we are not always right.

This is incredibly frustrating to watch. Ron has the physical tools to lead this team. But he cannot lead this team emotionally, and what makes it worse is that he is convinced that he is that guy.

Ron Artest is a $40 billion dollar airport with a 10 cent control tower. Fasten your seat belts - it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Oh my...
Fan House, you sum it up so well.  I dont really have much to add that hasnt been said a hundred times on these boards.  I just cant imagine how tiring Ron must be for the rest of the team.  Talk about a locker room distraction.
Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal

Incidentally...
where was the apocalyptic outrage when Salmons and Moore were fined earlier this year for essentially doing the exact same thing?  Not that anyone here is unduly biased towards Artest or anything.

Not the first time
DB - Salmons and Mikki Moore have otherwise not been a problem.  Artest has.

I don't remember the Salmons fine
But we ripped the shit out of Mikki when that whole thing went down. Where were you?

Salmons...
... didn't deserve his fine. He just fled the locker room immediately after the game, didn't mouth off.

Am I the only one?
Who has played team sports and been on a lousy team where you were one of the best players, always trying to motivate and lead and at times expressing frustration about how things are going?

You see, the deal with Ron is that he just says what he thinks.  He doesn't have the filter on his mouth and brain that most people have, but I believe what he is saying ALOT OF GUYS ARE FEELING. I also think that's why Reggie puts up with it and in fact actually likes Ron because of it...he just has to draw the line some where and this is where he drew it yesterday.

There is nothing worse than being super competitive and being stuck with a bunch of guys who won't nut up and feeling trapped for the duration of the rest of the lousy season.

I'm still in your corner Ron.  I mean come on, how much can he really hurt this team by saying what he thinks?  Give me a break.

Excellent Points
But if the self proclaimed leader of the team attempts to publicly or privately undermine the authority of the coach and/or his staff, my opinion is that he can hurt the team plenty.

So you've played team sports
And been called out or have called out your teammates or coaches in the major media?

You're comparing apples and aircraft carriers here.

I do agree with you that he can't really hurt this team by saying what he thinks. If anything, it will help the team long-term as it probably ensures his exodus during the summer.

yeah
you absolutely never publicly question your coach and his abilities. when it comes to calling out fellow players it's fair game, but you better be prepared to back up what you say.
