Why I'm done for the year--wake me up when Artest isn't in a Kings uniform

{UPDATE: I misstated some stuff in here (like not posting). If you read it take it as I'm extremely tired of watching this Kings team. If there hadn't been posts already I would have deleted this thing--pookeyguru}

Just a perfect day,
Drink sangria in the park,
And then later, when it gets dark,
We go home.
Just a perfect day,
Feed animals in the zoo
Then later, a movie, too,
And then home.

Oh its such a perfect day,
Im glad I spent it with you.
Oh such a perfect day,
You just keep me hanging on,
You just keep me hanging on.

Via Lou Reed. (For the record this song better speaks to how I feel when you listen to the symphony towards the end of the song.)

It's not fashionable to throw the book at Geoff Petrie and say no mas! I've already done that once. I've already posted a post-apocalyptic trade idea already. And you know what I've found? I could absolutely care less now. I'm the same guy who found this rather interesting set of points made by Senora Ziller to be rather poignant. Mostly because it's true. The truth is though, that grabbed me in November. I'm tired, and because other issues in my life press me more than pointing out every single flaw in Artest's game, and the logic that has kept him in the EC, I'd just rather drink a few beers and ruin an ergonomic keyboard.

I've watched the last several days come up with some interesting content. I watched coolcat's diary and have read some of the comments. I thought it was the pure and complete essence of CC. It was both intelligent and divisive at the same time. It was both thoughtful analysis and extremely disrespectful of Sam Amick and Sac State grads (which include my Grand Mother--who went into teaching--and my own mother who took close to 8 years to graduate; to make things worse my Grand Father helped kickstart some of the Math department at the school). It's always interesting to see people's snobbery of something. In past years it was bigger city types (NYC, LA) snubbing their nose at "That Cowtown" for daring to be a big city. (Jerry Reynolds in his bright breezy memoir bristled at the fact that when the Knicks held the 3 point shooting record it mattered. When the Kings did the record no longer did. A better example of this--not to mention a lot more famous--in recent times is Barry Bonds vs Hank Aaron.) In this case it was saying that Sac State grads aren't big time enough to be successful in a merciless corporate world that is constantly deriving it's success on 1up'ing the next guy. Ah, irony! It's the spice of life ain't it?

I'm tired of the arguing, and I'm tired of the whole merry-go-roundness of it all. (This is not me waving my sonic finger at anyone because I am the most guilty of starting crap around here. I'm just saying I see why other's are tired of it. Most of the time I don't mind being divisive, but given these mentally trying times I mind.) I haven't seen how the team is better with Artest, and truthfully I still haven't seen a single thought out argument on how Ron makes this team better. I've seen alot of opinion, and I've seen a small point here or there. But I haven't seen a group of small points, as part of a larger point, defending Artest as a keeper. (My theory? Ron Artest is not a long term solution for anything but division.) I am still waiting for such an argument. Instead I will compare Ron to C-Webb. I've always been of the opinion that Webber was overrated in the rebounding department. I always felt that if your team is a mediocre in an area, and since Webber is universally considered the best player on this team's dominant years earlier in this decade, as the Kings were in rebounding doesn't that say something about Webber? Likewise if the Kings are at the bottom of the league in defense with a player like Artest doesn't that makea difference in one's analysis of whether Artest is valuable?

Coolcat if you want people to understand your points saying stuff such as this don't confuse the issue like you did here:

Sam Amick is a Sac State graduate in his first job, and it looks like he's finally figured out that the way to make the jump out of Sactown to a "real" job is to create some controversy. It's too bad he's missing such a nice story in the process. You could say the same thing about some other "journalists" as well. TZ already pointed it out, but Amick isn't doing his first newspaper job. It seems to me he's rather interested in remaining a beat writer for the Kings. He's probably laid some roots in SacTown and probably likes it there. Perhaps his wife, and their small child, have alot of say in this matter. To call Amick a hack shows 2 things:
  1. Anything that contradicts Artest is not reasonable
  2. You're grip on reality is not always as tight as it should be
Furthermore, down in the comments part of the diary, you say this: I think Amick has gradually shifted more towards digging up dirt, especially in the past few weeks, even if it's based on pretty thin "research" and is more speculation than confirmed fact. Reread the Mikki Moore quote and how he turned that into a two-night drinking binge. Maybe it happened, maybe it didn't. But because he hinted that it did based on a non-confirmation quote from Mikki, some folks take it as gospel. First off I take nothing based on word alone. I've felt for some time that Amick doesn't just print things just to print things. In fact for a guy stirring up drama you forgot to mention that Amick is the same guy who didn't follow the team to Dallas (clearly a fact finding mission to find out the dirt on Reef's helping kids--do ya thang Yosemite Sam!) to report on an INJURED GUY'S CHARITY WORK (a real National Enquirer dirt exclusive if I ever saw one). Then you said this: If Artest was partying in Miami, ask Artest if he was. If Artest gets a fine, ask him for his response. Put these ghuys on the spot but also give them a chance to respond.

What I find absolutely fascinating about this thread is that nobody apparently cares that this is a pretty decent team when they have all the horses. I guess that part of the post was just too dry to comment on.

Umm, what? People DID comment on it. TZ did. Section did. Crown did. (And that's just noting that I saw specific comments regarding the W/L records with various players in & out of the lineups you cited Coolcat.) Let me suggest something CC. Do not respond to questions such as this: So, do you think player dissatisfaction with Musselman last season had anything to do with the 5-17 record down the stretch? And if so, would that be a fair story for a Bee reporter to discuss?

And how do you know it's idle speculation? It's not like Amick isn't with the team constantly and knows these guys a bit. Additionally, wouldn't printing unfounded rumors and flat-out lies hurt his access to the guys down the road?

You responded by saying this (don't claim I misquoted you): Probably and yes, with the following caveat. Be as specific as possible, and don't trade favorable treatment of a player for dirt. Don't say "the whole team hates Musselman" if it's in fact one or two players. Provide some context that quantifies and qualifies your premise. Dude, your critical reading skills need a LOT of work. There was nothing SAID about the entire team hating Musselman, or, for that matter, 2 players hating Muss. It was asked if player dis-satisfaction was behind Muss' demise and that's all that was said. It seemed to me, that more or less, the question was posed as about how much can asking that "type of question" is fair game for a professional journalist to ask. It wasn't asking if that type of question is merely a gossip-esque type of question. If you want professional/honest adults to take you seriously you must show seriousness in how you respond. You don't have to do this with every post, every time, in every way, but when a serious topic arises you should treat it with such respect. None of your answers show any such proclivity sir. Consider this my final response to you Coolcat.

I think the most frustrating thing is that for the first time in awhile I find myself at that nauseating level I was at just over a year ago. I started posting/flame threading/posting ridiculously long diaries that sometimes makes sense but mostly don't/annoying all on this blog (rather that glimpsing at it for every couple of weeks) and have been happy doing so. I've learned much in the process, and hope to continue to learn down the road at some point. But I've nothing left to learn over the rest of the season but shaking my head in Hueyesque disapproval. And it doesn't take the Kings to do that for me. So, instead of watching a crappilicious 2 OT game of the Kings vs Clipps, I watched a movie about a pregnant 16 year old kid whose quips and wacked out cynicism helped it win an Academy Award. Good Times indeed. Thank You Geoff Quijote! And with that I drop you a classic wondering what it has to do with this diary (I'm still trying to figure out that myself).

The problem is all inside your head, she said to me
The answer is easy if you take it logically
Id like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover

She said its really not my habit to intrude
Furthermore, I hope my meaning wont be lost or misconstrued
But Ill repeat myself at the risk of being crude
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover
Fifty ways to leave your lover

If you prefer a less cynical version of an ending song:

High time we made a stand and shook up the views of the common man
And the lovetrain rides from coast to coast
D.j.s the man we love the most
Could you be, could you be squeaky clean
And smash any hope of democracry ?
As the headline says youre free to choose
Theres egg on your face and mud on your shoes
One of these days theyre gonna call it the blues

And anything is possible when youre sowing the seeds of love
Anything is possible - sowing the seeds of love

So, yeah I think my elongated silence is needed now more than ever. I'll wake up from my Kings related slumber on April 16. See ya then.

Seriously pookey, I hope that your frustration subsides in a couple of days. I agree with you often, enjoy you always (especially since you have added musical refences to some of your works - nice!).

I'm with section...
you are an acquired taste, but you add a lot to almost every discussion. We are all busy people, and I understand needing a break, I kind of feel the same way. But...as a member of this community, we owe it to each other to linger, let this season play out, play the games if you will. If not? You may wake up in mid-April to find that the inmates have taken over the asylum, that CC has gained a bigger following and that more senseless circular reasoning has infiltrated the very being of StR.

Section
On 2nd reading I forgot to point out some things. I'm not really interested in the team; but I need to step back to evaluate exactly where I am with this team.

My frustration lies with Petrie mostly at this point. And if Coolcat wants to use the "unsaid story angle" that is the best one if you ask me.

I'm going to cut back on my posts over the course of  the next month. Alot. Hopefully I'll have some more, elongated unfortunately, stuff that will be worth the little posting of that time.

I wasn't planning to leave, and in fact I mistakingly omitted that in this diary, but I'm just tired of the circular debates with Coolcat, and that pertains to Ron Artest just as much while we're on that subject, and I agree that we need each other to finish the season. Hopefully I can spend an hour reading this when I'm done writing for the day.

Either way if I have something that moves me to say something I will. I'm not going to stop posting. I'm just going to focus the bulk of my energy elsewhere.

Take care, Pookey!
I feel your frustration.  I'll still look forward to your posts, less frequent as they may be for awhile.

If CC posted this musical reply to your diary, would you come back sooner?

I hope you smiled, at the very least.

Dude I swear
I'm not the only fan frustrated, and I am supremely frustrated, but that's only part of it. The whole post was too "drama queenish" for my taste. And to answer the CC question I'm not that interested in him. So no I wouldn't reply to it. That's funny though.

If you think I'm bad, just read some of this stuff about Tyrus Thomas. While I'm not enamored of the situation Petrie put this team in I'm also glad he hasn't done the bang up job Paxson has either.

(I really really wish I hadn't written this the way I did. I really really really wish that now.)

I don't think you're bad,
I think I "get" your frustration.

I was just trying to say that I see you as a valuable member of this community that I enjoy reading.

Even when you're a contrarian, you cite multiple stats and other examples of why you see things the way you do.

You don't seize on a single line out of a single article to argue your point each and every time you post.  You spend time researching the pros and cons of your opinion and post links that both agree and disagree with your conclusion.

Gasp! I think you're even open-minded enough to change your initial intention based on your research.

In short, your long free-style diaries and comments give me even more to think about once I've read them.  Sometimes my thoughts end up more muddled, but I've been exposed to more information as a result of your posts.  Thank you.  They do not make me roll my eyes and dismiss them or skip them entirely.  I've said it before, and I guess I'm saying it again, I don't always agree with you, but I do appreciate the thought, knowledge, and time you put into your articles.

You add spice to the mix in a good way.

Cheers,
KK

Coolcat won't have that following
because he doesn't use reasoning to bring anything to light. He just uses whatever specific "piece of information" to justify his personal opinion. There is a large difference.

Thanks for the kind words.

Pookey, Amick and Artest
>>Consider this my final response to you Coolcat.<<

LOL. Probably until later today.

Re: Amick, he's done a nice job overall, but I think he missed the boat in the areas I pointed out. Obviously some folks disagree. I definitely never said he was a hack.

I said he was a Sac State graduate. I'm not sure how that got twisted into a condemnation of the school. But let's face it, it's not a highly reknowned school in the area of journalism or overall. It's not the Columbia School of Journalism or the Harvard of the West. It is what it is - an excellent place for mostly local folks to get a solid four-year college education and degree at a decent cost. And that degree can take you anywhere you want to go in this life.

My point was that Amick is a fairly young and inexperienced reporter still working on his pedigree in the sportswriting profession. But he obviously has some skill, or I wouldn't be considering the notion that he could move up in the world.

The Sacramento Bee ranks 38th in newspaper circulation in the U.S. Newspaper circulation is stagnating.

The Internet, radio and TV worlds offer higher salaries that would probably be enticing to Amick and his family. I doubt that he would share your off-and-on passion for the Kings if someone else offered to double his salary in a beat that covered the entire NBA. Earth to Pookey: there is a world outside of Sacramento, and Amick is part of it.

If you don't think Amick is shooting for a higher stage and that he will be at the Bee for the rest of his life, let's just say we disagree. And, again, take that as evidence that I think he has the talent to do that, unlike Voisin and some of the other hacks we will be stuck with for a longer time because they have no such skills.

While you are correct some others commented on the W-L info, it was mostly in passing if at all. As I noted in a followup post, that's probably my fault for mixing the two subjects. The Amick discussion could have clearly been a separate diary, and probably should have. Hindsight is 20-20.

You and others have put me in the pro-pro-pro-Artest camp and said that I feel "anything that contradicts Artest is not reasonable." I guess if you repeat a lie enough times it becomes the truth, but if you look back you'll find that I have been a lot more balanced on Artest.

I wasn't opposed to trading him, and I've pointed out the flaws in his game numerous times. I've said the Kings should cut his minutes and those of most of the other starters to give some of the other players minutes.

But obviously that's not good enough for the part of the crowd here that is more opposed to Artest having a future with the team or is less interested in offering a balanced look at his contributions as well as his "sins." So be it.

One of your best responses to date.
If you would have posted this type of rebuttal on the thread in question you could have saved yourself from the intense scrutiny that followed. Sometimes its better to not respond to every single post aimed at you, it tends to open up Pandora's box. Lay out your opinion, like you have here, clarify your point  so you don't end up defending yourself from so many angles. You have a lot to give to the discussion but, no one can fight all the battles that you end up fighting and retain a clear stance on an issue.  Just my opinion.

I posted the response to Pookey first.
Your response was very good. My point to Pookey is that the community that he returns too may not be the same he leaves. I referenced you because his post is aimed at you. I agree with many of his issues with you, without having guys like Pookey around to cite Larry Coon and other sources, the integrity of this site will probably suffer. Even if you don't like Pookey, you have to respect his knowledge regarding the cap. StR needs voices, you and Pookey are both strong voices. Whether you want to admit it or not, Pookey has helped with the development of your posting here by giving you the resources to post feasible trade ideas and future structuring of the Kings roster from a cap point of view.

html and put polls up. (And the day you learn some of the html is the day you become dictator. Irony! If it's for Castro it can be for you!) Because that's a day I will have to go absent. I know it's all a joke, but the whole chalupa of the idea is just too, I don't know, dramaesque for me. I don't need to be loved on here. It would be nice, on occasion, that the same set of people aren't saying the same things constantly. That list of who to blame, is far, wide and ranging, is one that certainly starts with me. I think I am at heart a masochist.

A few beers in...
...time to weigh in on this.

Some subjects are too important to try to discuss while at work (or while completely sober).

Pookey,

I don't always agree with the points you make, but you always make points that provoke true discussion.  Nothing in the blogsphere is more important than those posters who can generate a genuine debate.  Far too often we fall into the trap of calling certain contributors nothing more than idiots or blowhards.

I haven't been part of StR for very long.  I discovered the site in the middle of last offseason.  This site brought me home.  I moved out of Sacramento about 10 years ago, and it became incresingly difficult to follow the Kings.  I returned home one Thanksgiving and learned about some hotshot kid named Jason Williams who was making things exciting.  It blindsided me.  Except for playoff games and a few games on national television, I spent the next several years wishing I knew more about the Kings.  If only I had been able to find a community such as this one back then.

Even now, as the Kings toil in mediocrity, I feel that this is a true community.  Not everyone is going to agree or get along, and there will be good times and bad times.  Hell, we're Kings fans, we know how to toil through the bad times.  But this is a time of promise.  The western conference is stronger than ever, and the Kings struggle to keep near .500, but we see signs of the future.  Ron Artest drives us crazy at times, but we see glimpses of what could be with Shawes, Douby, Salmons, Udrih, and Martin.

I guess it all boils down to this...StR needs you.  Hell, I need you. I'm a mess without you. I miss you so damn much. I miss being with you, I miss being near you. I miss your laugh. I miss your scent; I miss your musk. When this all gets sorted out, I think you and me should get an apartment together.

Ok, I'm sorry, I got a little carried away.  But hang in there with us.  All the way through to the end.  The bad times will make the return to the good times all that much better.

Thanx Exhibit
I wasn't really planning on not posting on the blog or anything. This whole diary ended up being a mass convoluted piece of crap that is petty and short sighted in equal parts.

I, however, though find it interesting about the J-Will narrative. He's what brought me back to the team in 99 after having joined the Military and stuck in Florida with little Kings news to speak of.

Mostly Exhibit, and I don't think I'm alone in this,  but if we constantly agree with each other we'll become the circle jerk that is the Napear/Lamb radio show. That's part of where the whole CC thing has sorta ticked me off some. I'm all for minority thought being allowed on here; hell I'm part of that minority sometimes. I fear that with CC posting contradictory crap consistently it will make that tendency less of a priority than it should be.

Last but not least this is not a good time to abandon this place just because I'm disenfranchised. I wasn't actually saying I was going to leave StR for good (and haven't intended to as of yet), and if that came across as such I apologize, but mostly was going to step away for a bit to take some stock of where I am at with this team.

P.S. If you're drunk off 2 beers I'm very disappointed. I figure the Rocky Mountain refreshing freshness would take at least 6 to get you a quality buzz.
