GAME 63 at Evil Los Angeles, Game Thread

Slow day in Kingsland. KJ's getting smeared, Martin's ensuring his place in the Debate Club with smart Shelden Williams and noble Spencer Hawes, and Artest's coming back from the dead.

Oh, and the Lakers attempt to suck some more soul from our lifeless bodies.

Game's at 6:30 p.m. Big one between the Spurs and Sun at 12:30. Good day for basketball.

Go Kings.

UPDATE: Forum Blue & Gold has its preview up. Be warned, though: The embedded YouTube may cause your retinas damage.

I love the quote by Artest.
Commenting on how he has missed fewer games than he could have this year (true), though he has still managed to miss more than 20% of the games this year (also true):

That shows commitment. So for anybody to forget that, they have different agendas, and that means they didn't like me from the beginning. Don't be on my side. Stay against me, and the people that's with me, stay with me.

I'd rather get all those people out now, and I want them to stay like that. So when we start winning don't come on the bandwagon, all right? Don't come say, 'Hey Ron, I love you.' No.>Insert text of the quote here

Ron, we love you. The problem with your bandwagon is that it is up on blocks an awful lot.

Lakers-Kings not enticing anymore
I said I was a bad Kings fan this year. Well I'm starting to feel down right naughty now. I don't care if the Kings beat the Lakers anymore this year. In fact, I rather the Kings play the young guys and lose than to see some veterans play out the season in a half-hearted manner and probably still lose.

It's Time
The Kings brain trust needs to divide the team into two groups: those who have a future with the team and will still be here in 2009 and beyond, and those who don't and won't.

Play the future and start to sever the ties with those who aren't part of it.

There's also a third group of players who they're still trying to peg. I guess they are part of the future until you clearly push them into one pile or the other.

This kind of worries me
"I'm just going to keep working, because in order to win a championship in this league, I've got to be able to compete. I've got to have somebody on this team that can compete with Kobe and LeBron (James). So I'm not going to leave it to chance."

its just the lakers
we always play hard against the lakers. maybe we just play hard with really good teams. havent you guys noticed that the whole season. we can beat all those hard teams but we also lost so easily against sucky teams. As long as its a good team the kings play hard with heart. But against whatever teams there usually isnt anything there at all.

Theus has said it many times this year...
The Kings have a major tendency to play to the level of the competition. Easy teams they play as such, until they've put themselves too far to come back.  Great teams they play as such, and often win or lose by a small margin... It's just the nature of the organization this year.

Until the team learns to play with consistency, which we haven't seen in over three years now, we will never be a conference contender again. Hell the west just keeps getting more stacked... so forget the conference contender... we're screwing ourselves out of the playoffs time and time again from now until this mindset changes.

Artet came out with 3:00+ in the third and never got back on the floor.  Way to go Theus!  If he's too hurt to plsy the last two games, than he is too hurt for crunch time minutes.  Plus, both 'Cisco and Salmons were doing a better job defending Kobe.

What is up with Miller sucking lately?  How about that last Kings offensive sequence.  Miller gets the ball at the top of the key wide open but instead of shooting passes to Beno.  Luckily a Laker fell down in front of Beno and he got two free throws to win the game.  Miller looked lame.

Great win
Especially in the context of the team faltering repeatedly in crunch time. It starts to nag at your belief in yourself. I have to tell you when they sent Miller back in for the final Kings possession I had visions of him coughing the ball up on a double team or dribbling it off his leg. But it all worked out.

Maybe this will be a building block for future fourth-quarter triumphs.

That's pretty interesting from a guy that admitted he didnt play the last two games because the weaker opponents gave him an oppertunity to rest his hurt leg/foot.

Nice win
Down the stretch, it looked like the Kings were going to find a way to cough up another close one. Beno shot a three very early on the shot clock, Garcia's offensive foul driving the lane when he should have pulled it out to burn some time.

But they finally figured it out in crunch time. Huge free throws by Beno and great defense on Kobe on the final play.

Honestly, I thought Mikki played a great game. So I've taken the hater signature down (for now).

Two things
Was it great D on Kobe or was Kobe trying to get his teammates involved as he was not as nearly as dominant last night

Did anyone see the wrap up of this game on Sports Center after the game was over, what a travesty, it was look at the Lakers take an early lead, lets look at the Lakers shoot in the 2nd quarter, the Beno jumper at end of the half a mention of the Kings scoring 71 in that period, then the Lakers making a run in the forth, the lakers tying up the game, a mention of Beno getting a call to go ahead and Kobe missing the game winning shot.  Pathetic really ESPN but not really a surprise, as this was a great game

by Murf on Mar 10, 2008 7:59 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yah Well
ESPN only knows who Kevin Martin and Ron Artest are. Since it was Beno, Spencer, Moore and Garcia making things happen, ESPN had no idea who they were so they stuck to the guys they were familiar with like Kobe.

by dalt99 on Mar 10, 2008 8:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's not true
ESPN knows perfectly well who they are, but they choose to sell the big name rather than inform the viewer, because some producer thinks Kobe missing gets more viewers than Beno passing and Shawes dunking.

Outside of Sac, no one knows them; that's why ESPN doesn't show them.

That said, ESPN sucks grandiose hairy cajones.
