GAME 81 vs San Antonio, Game Thread

Incidentally, as the last home game of the year, the time to get free Kings swag is now. Tickets are available (an understatement); if you desparately need a Brad Miller poster or Kings miniball, tonight's your night.

If Manu Ginobili doesn't play, this should be a fascinating battle. If he and Kevin Martin both play, also potentially fascinating.

Go Kings.

screw the poster
I want a B-52 headband like the rest of the team. I was waiting for the all headband lineup at the Hornets game the entire game. (Douby, Cisco, Salmons, Mikki, and Shawes) Unfortunatly the '"We want headbands!" chant didn't catch on. Although that crowd could barely chant "defense" I guess I can't expect them to do a 4 syllable chant that involves clapping if they can't even do a basic 2 syllable chant.

Tonight
Tonight really couldnt mean any less to me.  I hope the Kings rest everyone of importance, so no one is tired tomorrow.  Lets face it, tomorrow's game against the Lakers is our championship game (at least in my eyes).  Nothing could mean more to me than beating the Lakers in their building, and possibly knocking them out of first place.

Kobe
He'll be playing for the MVP trophy tomorrow night.

I think he gets it if the Lakers are top seed in the West.

I think Chris Paul might get it if Hornets are No. 1 in the West.

If neither the Lakers or Hornets get it, it might be Kevin Garnett's year. Or that guy in Cleveland.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Apr 14, 2008 5:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not that guy in Cleveland...
That would be "mvp" by default. The award should go to the best guy on the best team IN THE LEAGUE. Garnett has too much help in Boston,& is Kobe as valuable to his team as Chris Paul is to his?

By that matter, might has well give it to Timmy Duncan. I think he's as deserving as Garnett as to what he means to his team;IMO.

Lakers wouldn't be where they are without Gasol
Kobe doesn't get the MVP because the Lakers probably wouldn't even be in the playoffs without the Pau Gasol trade, meaning he wouldn't even be considered.  Gasol's acquisition and play should not get Kobe an MVP.

Totally not trying to pick on you, I've just been thinking for the last couple of months how far fans have changed in their opinion of Shawes this year.  I'll admit to being one of them.

He's shown more than expected (admitting that I cringed when he claimed he needed more playing time.)

He's played so well as a 19 year old rookie, now I can't even begin to fathom his upside.

Was he underated in the draft?  Or am I just scratching for positives this year?

Well, in the first part of that comment, it's easy to understand his upside. He should be very very very good. He certainly has the tell-tale signs that he wants to be. The only question will his body hold up.

As far as being underrated perhaps he was. And you use that as a scratching positive mark, and there are far worse things. Like wondering how good Anthony Johnson could be.

I probably did.  What can I say except that I am a hopeless optimist when it comes to the Kings and I try to scratch out any hopeful thing I can find, but Anthony Johnson (no offense intended)?   AJ might be a good backup next year.

In Honor of the Last Home Game:
Does anyone know where the highest point in the world is?
Anywhere Sheldon Williams' forehead is.

Did you know Sheldon Williams can cook an entire 12 lb honey baked ham in his forehead during the course of one basketball game?

At night Shelden Williams' forehead becomes a shelter for homeless people.

Shelden WIlliams can survive for up to 7 days in the desert with the water he stores in his forehead.

Does anyone know where Jimmy Hoffa is buried? Shelden Williams' forehead.

The answer to climate change is in Shelden Williams' forehead.

Shelden Williams is actually two people: Shelden Williams, and his forehead.

Shelden Williams' forehead is the 6th man of the year.

Shelden Wiliams' forehead is number 22 and 1/2.

Shelden Williams didn't commit the foul, his forehead did. Foul on number 22 and 1/2.

You have to admit that Kenny Thomas
has shown a lot of restraint this season.  He mouthed off last year and earlier this year.  It's obvious the dude still wants to play, and to me anyway, it's also obvious he can help a team.  It's just not this team and not this year.  I think he's shown a lot of maturity in accepting the fact that he's not playing.

I hope the team finds a way to trade him to a team that can use him.  It's not his fault he's overpaid for his skills...in another situation, he might be appropriately priced for his skills.

I really don't think he's an overpaid bum, I just think he's in a bad situation and he's dealing with it well.  Is he overpaid?  On this team, yes.  Is he a bum?  No way.

I think he's a better player than the role he's been given.  Somewhere else he does have some value.

End rant.  I don't love the guy, but I think he's handling a bad situation pretty well, and he didn't make it in the first place.

I think another team could use him.

OK...seriously ending rant now.

Pile on.

Re: You have to admit that Kenny Thomas
No, it's actually nice to see someone playing poodle's advocate. I actually enjoyed watching K9 play immediately after the Webber trade, and thought to myself, "Man, this cat can play." Obviously, I was a '60s beatnik and also not quite clear on the dog metaphors quite yet. But I was happy with how he  was playing. Though, that may have just been a residual effect of seeing Corliss back in a Kings jersey as well.

But, man. Something changed with K9, and whether he turned out to be just s scape-goat for the coaching staff in regards to the lackluster season that preceded this one, or whether he truly was a rotten apple, I have to admit, I did not see this many DNP-CDs coming. I really didn't. Not by a long shot. Even when things looked their darkest, and the Kings were the last team without a road win, Reggie never was desperate enough to call out to K9.

I cannot even remember the last time I saw him play basketball. And truth be told, that is a good thing. Because I do remember the first game of the season in New Orleans, and I do remember some missed layups that had me shouting "How the hell does this guy get paid to play the game of basketball?!"

It was encouraging to read a few months back that he was training with Webber's coaches, and I wish him the best of luck over the summer. Reggie seems to have lit a spark under a lot of players on the team, and maybe riding pine all season long will be what it takes to force K9 to adapt to a small, effective role next season.

Here's hoping.

by The Ghost of Dick Bavetta on Apr 14, 2008 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I respect your opinion
and agree with it to a large extent for this season only.

I liked his play, as well, when he came over from Philly.  I still think he's the same guy.  He's just not a good fit on this team.

The Kings, since coming to Sacramento, have been known for being the team (via trades) that almost always finds a way to fit in that "quirky" guy that other teams couldn't make work (Artest, Webber, Divac, Richmond, Pollard, Christie, Clark, et al).

As a small market team, the Kings have always looked for that guy (via trade) with talent who had "quirks" the rest of the league had trouble dealing with which made them much cheaper or easily traded for.

Some of them have worked out supremely well, some have worked out pretty well, and some of them have been spectacular disasters.

I'd place K9 somewhere around 50% between pretty well and specactular disaster.

He did a good job in the first year, a decent job last year (with flashes of better than good), and this year being non-productive because he's not playing.

Shit, this team gave up on King Tut and he's a significant bench player for Phoenix.

All I'm trying to say is that I think Kenny is NBA worthy.  He's not a good fit on this team which is why he's not playing.  But I still think there is room in the league for him to catch on with another team if the Kings can't find him some playing time next season.

K9 vs. SAR
yeah, i just meant that SAR started the whole K9 downward spiral. in 04-05, when k9 first got here, there was only skinner and corliss to battle with. and they were both defined 2nd string players. then 05-06, SAR joins the team. SAR's a better scorer, and adelman liked that. so SAR cut down a little on k9's minutes and shots per game. k9, being the baby he was, stops trying as hard and his free throw shooting starts steadily dipping, along with his minutes. and with his less minutes, his bonehead plays started standing out. and this continued up into this year, then he just couldn't get out of theus' doghouse...but i do agree, that at 30 years old, he could still help a team out. maybe like a mascot coach at georgia

ps - no way to change my screen name huh? anybody? i'm no longer in hawaii. i'm now a kingsfaninjapan! that has a nice sound to it too!

I don't want to see Kenny
play, BUT I can't argue that he doesn't have NBA talent on the right team.

The Kings are not the right team for him, but there's room for him in the league.  Jeebus Gawb awmighty!  He's a much better player than Paul Shirley and 30,000 other players who have been paid to play in the NBA.  Boom though, anyone?

I guess I'm just tired of everyone crapping on him.

Not a good fit on this team, not an attractive contract (did his previous GM have a loaded pistol held to his head while he agreed that KT had earned that contract?) for trading purposes.  Has anyone in the history of the world ever turned down more money to do the same job?  Was there a loaded pistol held to Geoff Petrie's head when he agreed to take on Thomas's contract?

Was there a loaded pistol held to Petrie's head when he traded Stojakovich for Artest?  I'm guessing no since there were no police reports posted on the Bee.

I suspect they were both just bad gambles on the part of Kings management that didn't work out.

Que sera, que sera.

I'm still voting you in to the StR HOF third...or sixth behind the SB family.

Bad!!
I prepared a lot for this game. I even got a new jersey of Brad Miller: http://www.dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=97064&ru=279 , but the kings lost. 3 points! That is a pity!

My question is
WHERE WAS SPENCER HAWES DOWN THE STRETCH WHEN WE NEEDED SOME OFFENCE?

Theus
I was at last night's game: Very exciting - fans were great.

Now to Reggie: This was one of the few games this year that I felt Reggie coached poorly - well coaching poorly in the 4th quarter anyway. There was no excuse for not having Hawes in the game the last half of the 4th. Nor was there any excuse for sitting Beno so long in the 4th when it was obvious (a) Douby can't dribble or play the point and (2) Douby can't guard Parker (or most PGs).

The last 3 or 4 minutes the Spurs simply clogged the lane and dared us to shoot jumpers. (Of course, we decided to go 1 on 5 most of the time, but, hey, Salmons got away with it most of the night, so it is tough to get down on him.) Sheldon might as well not even have been on the floor because the Spurs were playing 4 on 5, totally ignoring him because they knew he was no threat to score. Hawes would have stretched the defense because of his shooting and/or we could have run the high post offense through him to bring out there big men and allow cutters.

Poor coaching by Theus: He didn't see the match ups or understand the best chance we had of scoring and winning.

Totally agree
I kept yelling at my TV "Where's my point guard?!"

Finally, my 10-year-old son came in the room and asked if I was ok. I pointed to the screen, and he says, "Oh. Never mind."

I know it's a dangerous sport to be a Monday morning quarterback, or even a Tuesday morning coach, but by a show of hands, how many of you believe we would have won the game if Beno had come back in earlier and Hawes had been on the floor at the end of the game?

I agree, we needed Spencer's scoring ability
in the game. But in Reggie's defense, Williams and Douby were the only 2 Kings with a positive +/- last night. Williams +10, Douby +3. And Hawes only hade 3 rebounds in 33 minutes.

true
Spencer's defense was not great last night. So, I figured that was Reggie's rationale. Williams is a better defender and rebounder. In fairness to Spencer, he had several tips that became rebounds for other people.  He was around the ball when he was in there.  My biggest issue with Spencer defensively is that he is in bad position vis a vis his man and the basket a lot of the times. Or he allows his man to establish too good of a position very early on in the shot clock.  He should get better with experience, coaching, and with additional strength.

Regardless, in the final few minutes, he should have been on the court.

Agreed
on all points. Adding some strength/growing into his body will help a lot over the next couple of years.

My only
thought as to why Theus would leave Q and Sheldon in so long was to see how the young's would do in a pressure situation.  See that doesn't apply to Spencer because... oh wait a second... SPENCER'S ONLY 19 YEARS OLD!!!  You're going to tell me that wouldn't have been the perfect situation to see how Spencer would handle the pressure.

And to make matter worse, Theus decides that giving Sheldon the ball on the block to win the game was the best play.  Bad 4th quarter for Theus.
