Notes from Coach Theus's Postgame

(I often listen to Reggie Theus's postgame comments, which are posted on the Kings website. It occurs to me most people might not, so it might be worth it to post up any noteworthy items [as pointed out by coolcat in the game thread], yes? Feel free to do this in the diaries after subsequent games.)

  • Quincy Douby strained his back in the first half; Theus said that combined with the close winnable game led him to hold QD out of the second half.
  • He said he doesn't believe Shelden Williams is "in the best shape." Sitting for 60 games tends to do that (which isn't an indictment of Theus; Williams got even less burn in Atlanta). I think it'd be a little too much to ask Shelden to play himself into shape between now and April 16, so we might have to wait until October to see the guy up to Theus's conditioning standards.

Artest plans on not opting out...
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3325260

Kind of figured this would be the case, but I am glad Artest has said so now, so he can flip flop a couple times before next season.

Excuses
Jesus, I didn't see Shelden have any problems getting down the floor and his performance was fine.  He played 24 minutes and the Kings beat a better team.  Quit complaining and play the damned guy.

by Carl on Apr 2, 2008 9:29 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

One more thing
If Shelden Williams doesn't play in the last 10 totally meaningless games, there's no way in hell he's playing in November.

by Carl on Apr 2, 2008 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Landlord
Shelden really just needs to concentrate on doing a few things well: set picks, play D, rebound and make dunks. Sometimes he gets the ball up top at the high post and shoots the shot, which is not his role. He needs to pass out of that and set another pick.

Houston has a ton of guys hitting the boards on both ends, so I think his performance in that area was OK last night.

Theus' doghouse is hard to get out of, and Shelden is in it for some reason. You can play great for several games and make a couple of bonehead plays and you are riding pine. And, if your name is Dahntay Jones, that can lead to unemployment.

I also think that transition pass from Kevin Martin was a little too long, and he probably would have been trying to save it from out of bounds if he did catch it.

Cmon, Reggie, just let the dude play.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Apr 2, 2008 9:39 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That's right
I agree that Shelden needs to do a few things well.  I would call his performance "good," but certainly nothing approaching great.  The rebounding was a problem for everyone on the Kings, and though Shelden was a lot better than Mikki in that area, I'd like to have seen even more boards from him.

Theus Comments
TZ, you might just post those postgame Theus links in your recaps if you get a chance. That's probably the best way to get a constant stream of unfiltered Coachspeak.

I agree
Agreed, because I'm too lazy to listen to them myself.  (I'm a bad, BAD Kings fan.)

Context
Sheldon gets drafted by one of the worst franchises in the league, has a decent rookie year, gets replaced by a rookie his Sophomore year for which he gets dogged by the media and his franchise, then gets traded mid-season with a bunch of expiring contracts. I think I can understand those circumstances leading to underwhelming play.  I say let him gets his feet on the ground. Let him have an off season in Sactown until we judge him.

by NYCFan on Apr 2, 2008 10:59 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

With NYCfan
I'd like to see Shelden play over the next few weeks but the true tale of the tape will be next season's camp.

The Kings get to watch Shelden all next year before deciding whether or not they will pick up his option in 2009-10, so there is no hurry in that respect. His play from now until the end of the season will not impact Petrie's draft decisions, and we have no money to sign any free agents at the 4.

I am very anxiuos to see what The Landlord brings to the party. But NYCfan is right. We probably won't know much until next year.

It all depends how he responds
Clearly being out of shape has a huge impact on your play and numbers, even if you are getting up and down the court okay. Just look at Brad this year vs last.

The question is does he do a Brad Miller and work his butt off this offseason because he is embarassed by his poor showing, or does he do a Kenny Thomas and pout at the end of the bench? Considering he doesn't have Brad's contract or K-9's I would expect the former, but I guess we'll see.

by SavageBeast on Apr 2, 2008 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually you're wrong on that front
They have decide BEFORE the season whether to pick up the option.

Well Sham has it right actually
Shelden Williams IS under contract for next season as Atlanta picked up his option before the start of this season (07-08). What HASN'T happened is that the Kings haven't picked up the option for the 09-10 season, and which they have to do so by October 31st or have him be a free agent at the end of the season. I hope that's cleared up. I don't ever want to talk about Shelden William's contract status ever again.

Via the Coon
Question 50 in the FAQ states this regarding rookie options:

Rookie "scale" contracts for first round draft picks contain team options for the third and fourth seasons (team options for the third season exist only for players drafted in 2005 or later), which must be exercised by October 31 of the prior season  No other options are permitted in rookie scale contracts.  See question number 41 for more information.

Let me add
Sheldon had to move away from his girlfriend, Candace Parker, who according to People is one of the 100 most beautiful people on the planet. I think if any of us were in his shoes we'd be underperforming too.

Let's hope the Monarchs draft her

by NYCFan on Apr 3, 2008 6:13 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw a little bit of her
game highlights on ESPN.  She really is a pretty girl, but more amazingly, she's one tough mofo.  She dislocated her shoulder twice against A&M and kept playing.  She's scheduled to play in the final 4 with a separated(sp?) shoulder.  I can't even imagine.

She's projected to be the number one pick in the WNBA draft and the LA Sparks have the first pick.

At least they'll be a short flight away from each other when they're both "at home".

God bless you, Corliss. You always played as though you knew how expensive my tickets were. -section214

One interesting aspect of Parker
is that she'll be the "first" early entry into the WNBA. I don't really see why this is a big deal, as is she is set to graduate, and she red-shirted her freshman year (she's a junior on the court). So, in that respect, I'm interested to see if there is a big deal, or if it even merits mentioning again, in this whole thing.

this is off topic but...
Anybody know anything about Olympic night tomorrow? As soon as I saw Kurt Angle was going to be there I started scrambling to find some spare cash. But I find myself wondering a few things.

A. Besides my Olympic hero who else is going to be there besides ex-Monarchs?

And B. Free autographs included with ticket to the game or will they be charging for autographs/pictures?

None of this is really important, but I'd like to know so I don't get there and get really disappointed

Ron Artest
I heard Reggie talking about Ron on the KHTK show with Mike Lamb today.  He was talking about drawing up plays to win the game with just a little time left on the clock, and wanting to get the ball to Ron.  Does anyone remember how many times Ron has actually won the game on a final shot this year, vs. how many times he has turned the ball over or bricked the shot?

by newkings on Apr 2, 2008 8:58 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

From Memory
Cisco had the two big shots, both coming on assists from Salmons.

Salmons and Martin both had a coast-to-coast winner.

Rom missed a last-second three on a pass from Bibby.

Kevin missed a couple shots in the last minute of a close loss to Cleveland early in the year while Artest was still suspended. He also missed a key shot at the end of his first game back from injury, and there was another game or two where they set up a final play for him and he missed the shot.

Ron missed several threes in that nasty loss to the Lakers.

I think someone hit a game winner off a pass from Artest when he was doubled in the block.

john and kevin
have more game winners than ron

by kingsTV on Apr 3, 2008 2:29 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

source?
Not to be officous, I'm jsut curious about the numbers. I wanna see 'em - is it a big difference? small difference? How many were assisted? How many were whil the team was tied? down 1? down 2? down 3?

From personal memory, I only remember ones from Cisco, Kmart and Salmons. None from Ron, but that doesn't mean anything. Seriosuly, that doesn't assist in any arguments.

Hence why I'd love a source. Unless I can just quote you - that would be cool to.

but Kevin is often
accused of "disappearing" in the fourth.  He can't make the big shot if the ball goes to Ron, Ron dribbles into traffic and turns the ball over.  I was also wondering if anyone had the facts on this.  Ron often makes great plays in the fourth to keep us in it, but I can't recall any game winners lately.

I do remember...
If Steve Novak wasn't so damn lucky Ron would have had the game-winner against the Rockets when they played in Houston (and broken the streak at 8, I wrote about this earlier). Artest was incredible that game.

I'm thinking he may have had a winner...
on a road trip in Charlotte in OT. If my memory serves me correctly, that's the game Gerald had a concussion.

Off topic
But I'm invoking the "Thread is more than 24 hours old" rule -

New Orleans has the best record in the west right now, over 50 wins and a .700+ winning percentage...and still has not mathematically clinched a playoff spot yet.

I can't remember being this excited about playoffs that don't invlove the Kings.

Agreed!
That's was I was so looking forward to GSW vs. Mav's last night...oh, wait.

But, yes, I am looking forward to the playoffs and hoping they are not as big of a letdown as last night's must win game.

Kenyon Martin Out Vs. Kings
He was suspended for Saturday's game against the Kings for his latest flagrant foul.

I'd like to piggyback off Section's 24 hr rule
Don't look now, but Atl's 5 game winning streak, and it's true they didn't beat anybody important, but in a wack ass L"east" do they have to? For everyone out there talking about how terrible the east is, every playoff participant is over 500 with the exception of the Hawks, who currently are 5 games under 500. Soemtimes the full 82 tells the whole story rather than 60 games in. (I'm pretty sure Bibby's health has made them better too.)
