Peaches is Dead. Long Live Peaches.
So... this happened.

To recap: Muff209 wore his Peaches shirt to the game, got on the pregame show, got close enough to the broadcast team to show off his tee... and landed in the Jack Daniels Images of the Game. (kingsTV captured the moment in the above screen-grab.)
Late last night, Mr. Napear himself emailed to ask that we refrain from selling the t-shirts. I suspected this day would come, though perhaps not so soon. I do not begrudge Grant for reserving the right to profit off his own face. We made $27 for the Sacramento SPCA ($3 per shirt, nine shirts sold), and I'm going to match that amount and deliver it to the pound as soon as Spreadshirt cuts the check.
Thanks to Lady Ziller for the flawless execution in creating the design, thanks to everyone who purchased one, thanks to Muff for getting it on T.V., thanks to kingsTV for capturing the magic, and thanks to Grant for not sending rottweilers to my house.
Now, back to basketball.

Dear Peaches,
I would take this opportunity to really rip you, but I can't help but pity someone that has a great job and (from all appearances) a great life, yet can't seem to enjoy it (again, at least not publicly). You appear to be a humorless, mean, joyless individual. I base that on your increasingly negative attitude on your radio show (I must admit that this opinion is a little old as I stopped listening 3 months ago), coupled with your reaction to a harmless T-shirt that benefits the local SPCA.
Grant Napear, you're a tool.*

The Hick from French Lick
If Peaches can't appreciate a little good natured ribbing then screw him. Although the idea that something I did caused Peaches so much grief that he had to rifle off a late night e-mail really makes me happy.
I'm also sorely tempted to call into Sportsline today and call him out on it.

I just don't get....
TV: mostly standard play-by-play fare, with ridiculous but entertaining exclaimations mixed in for good measure.
Radio: quite a bit more cantankerous/abbrasive and opinionated than his 'toned down' TV-self, with ridiculous but much less entertaining verbal tilts with the likes of 'Stanley' mixed in for good measure.
Now, I'm not involved in broadcasting, journalism or celebrity but I would think that you need to carve a 'niche' for yourself, particularly in the radio area where people tune in because of YOU, as opposed to TV where people tend to tune in because of the PRODUCT (eg. the Kings). For example, Koz has his 'smart aleck' thing going on (which I prefer), Carmichael Dave has his 'I'm wacky' thing going on (which grows tiresome very quickly), etc. Grant's got his 'I'm from the Mean Streets and will tell it to ya straight regardless of how it makes you feel' thing going. So what?
Admittedly, the first time I tuned in to Sportstalk (or whatever it's called) weekdays at 4pm (is that a plug?) I was irritated by this cranky, rude, opinionated son-of-a-b*tch but I did find that I tuned in the next day. And the next. You get it. Eventually, the comments he made and his opinions started to make sense to me, in spite of the sometimes abbrasive delivery. Again, so what? If you don't like that type of thing you can switch to the more vanilla programming on another station.
Anyway, if a media personality is elliciting a response from the audience then that, I think, is a good thing, right?
My first post. Blast away.

Eh
- He's a jerk on the radio, a real meanie. It reflects poorly on all of us when you consider his style begets angry, idiot callers who just want to fight and know he'll bite into it. The types of callers his style attracts makes all us Kings fan look like idiots. (I mean, compare the thougtful, funny callers a show like The Razor and Mr. T gets. No contest.)
- He has a number of verbal tics which, when paired with his mean-spirited, know-it-all personality, form a Voltron of rage. Like the harping on technical fouls. Or the harping on when the team gets to the penalty early in the quarter. Or the unending fawning for Mike Bibby last year (when Mike was terrible). Or chiding Miller for not shooting an open J. You are the play-by-play guy, man... call the game.
- I like most of his standard go-to slogans... but he has beat them into the freaking ground. It's a bit embarrassing to see a YouTube highlight of a pedestrian coast-to-coast jam with the announcer having a flipping conniption, like it's Game 7 of the Finals and someone nailed a 40-footer. There seems to be no scaling the excitement, which is required when a team is 35-40.

You have a right to your opinion
Answering your question is pretty simple. I've listened on an off to Grant argue, complain and insult people for more than 10 years, and it's made me hate the guy. Frankly, I don't know how anyone can stand him.
I only listened (past tense) because I wanted Kings news and had no other choices.

Second, I can live with him on the Kings broadcasts, but someday this horse's ass has to be taken off of the drive time KHTK radio show. I can only listen for about 2 or 3 minutes before he says something that pisses me off.
My main problem with his radio performance? One, I think he's a closet racist. Two, he shouldn't take any phone calls. Now, most of the people that call in are dumbasses, but he has two approaches with his callers. One is to berate them, and the other is to NOT have a conversation with them. Meaning, he will let them talk for thirty seconds then say "thanks for calling" and go to the next caller.
Basically, he's a moody prick.

I don't blame Grant completely. How much blame does Mike Remy for continually ignoring other options (such as broadcasting the a's--1140 is after all 1 of 2 super stations in Norcal--680 being the other--and yet they choose to kiss the Maloof's ass by broadcasting Monarch's games)????
Last but not least I think the fact that he "threatened to sue" just shows how threatened he was by a simple joke by a relatively small group of Kings fans.

Ehh
Unless it drives a captive audience away from the station altogther.
I used to listen to KHTK religiously on the morning and evening commute and sometimes at home.
Peaches' has turned my stomach so badly that I can't even listen to any of their shows anymore.
My loss, I suspect, since they are still the number one station for Kings news. I refuse to listen to Rant's program and I guess the Rise Guys are just collateral damage...but they have their own issues.
To recap, defender96; controversy is good...unless it leads to a complete station boycott.
I'm pretty much in station boycott mode. I loose some Kings news, I suffer less irritation by jackhole on-air personalities.
If KHTK's demographic is to attract the losers who get past their screeners (exception: CD's show which clears his lifetime buddies), then I have no business listening to their programming.
Qualification: KHTK occasionally clears a decent caller but it's too infrequent for me to take a chance on their programming.
But, that's just my opinion.
Good luck with your internship.

Parody and fair use
I am not in any way a lawyer, but you can make a strong argument that this shirt is a parody, which is protected as fair use. This is also not a commercial venture, since all the proceeds are going to the SPCA.
More info here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/18/national/18arnold.html?ei=5007&en=907933cc3fcee453&ex=1400

Now I'm sure you don't want to get sued by Grant Napear, though getting your shirt on the news would sell a hell of a lot of them. I'm just saying that I think you have an argument.
Here's a suggestion: Get 15 shirts - you know, the extras you have "laying around" - and mail one to each Kings player along with a note explaining that Grant wouldn't allow you to keep selling them. Suggest that the players wear the shirts. Brad Miller would do it in a minute. I pledge right now to contribute 20 bucks to this effort.
Anyway, I should have ordered one a didn't. They're a collector's item now.

Another suggestion
I recommend that all far flug and obsessive Kings fans (Pookey, Kfan, Kingsfanin Hawaii, 27free throws) submit their orders now. Shirts get sold, SPCA benefits, Arco is relatively shirt free, TZ doesn't get sued, and Peaches is haunted by their appearance at random road games.
I'll take two, and have one more reason to hope the Sonics don't leave Seattle.

oops, little late
Really I'm just disappointed in him. I thought he had to be aware that people poke fun at him. Apologies to those who didn't get the chance to buy a shirt. If I had known he was going to be a dick about it I wouldn't have shown it too him. Of course now I'm wearing it to every game I go to just to spite him. Apologies to the SPCA too, the shirt was a hit with a lot of fans and many asked me where they could get one. Now they can't because a petty person has thin skin, and the animals are the ones who suffer.
But frankly, and diehardkingsfan can attest to this, Peaches' reaction might just have been worth it.
by Muff209 on Apr 4, 2008 10:00 AM PDT 0 recs
Maybes
Maybe the SPCA can chime in and say some dog won't get adopted because of Napear.
Maybe Ron Artest can volunteer to buy $5,000 worth of the shirts with the proceeds going to the SPCA.
Maybe the SPCA can have a special Adopt a Pet on Peaches promotion.

y'all silly
Someone even goes as far to say that he has a dream job, and dream life, and that therefore nothing should effect him. Someone explain to me what this means? Mo money, less problems? Does he go home and soothe his pains away by bathing in twenty dollar bills? Is his life the modern version of Andy Griffith? You don't know anything about this guys personal life, so don't make moronic statements about it.
That was mostly in response to section214's post which had a bit of a corny undertone, so I could be mistaken as to how serious it was. But other than that, no one knows what this name means. Someone found it on Wikipedia and now....here it is. Sure it's funny to talk about on here but don't be presumptious by thinking that the name is a good tease for him in real life. (Insert tongue-in-cheek comment)
You guys go off on this guy far more than anyone else not named Ron Artest, and even Ron's criticism is balanced by supporters.

It's not the play-by-play that;s the problem
I don't think Section214's insinuation was that Napear should be happy because he makes a lot of money. I know I wouldn't say that. I've known too many unhappy rich people to ever say that.
The thing is - Rant makes a living watching and talking about sports. If I could sit here comment all day and get paid for it, I'd be the nicest, happiest guy you ever met. (Well, I do sit here and comment all day, but TZ hasn't sent my bonus check yet.) ;-)
The point is that Grant appears to lead a pretty charmed life, and he STILL seems like the angriest, most miserable person you can imagine.

Actually
He's often wrong on the score, personal foul counts, and team foul counts. It drives me nuts. I'm at home watching the game and counting fouls (casually) and he pronounces certain counts and I'm sitting there thinking "WTF?" and doubting my own counts, then he'll correct it without actually correcting it.
Team fouls, score, personal fouls. It drives me nuts. It's like he's not even watching the game.

Hmmm,
Look, Napear handled this poorly, period. He could have contacted TZ and asked him about the shirt before playing the "my attorney will contact you" card. Perhaps had he takent the time to find out that the shirt was for non-profitable causes he would have even jumped on board. Artest is doing PSA's for the SPCA. Grant may have liked the tie in. Or he could have simply said that the "Peaches" nickname is personally offensive to him and he would prefer to have the shirt taken out of circulation.

sigh
Not to mention that our opinion of the guy's work doesn't negate the fact the the t-shirt was an attempt at some good natured ribbing. When you have a personality like Grant's you have to expect people are going to have an opinion on it and take it in stride. It's part of the job. I've spent the last 2 years critisizing Mike Bibby. Does that mean if he were to muff a dunk like Brad did last night I can't give him sh*t about it because it would be malicious? No. He's a public figure, just like Grant. The ideal reaction I was hoping for from Grant was laughter. Because then it would at last humanize the guy. I don't want to hate him, he just tends to not leave us any choice.
