Nets Reportedly Want To Talk To Mario Elie

New, comments

David Aldridge of NBA.com reports that the New Jersey Nets, who have an assistant coach opening on Avery Johnson's staff, want to talk to Sacramento Kings assistant Mario Elie.

The Nets haven't replaced Sam Mitchell on Avery Johnson's bench yet, waiting for the end of the lockout to make formal offers. But word is they'd very much like to talk to Kings assistant Mario Elie, Johnson's former teammate on the first Spurs' championship team and one of Elie's best friends in basketball.

Elie is the top assistant in Sacramento; if he leaves, Paul Westphal would have to hire a replacement fairly quickly and that'd create a distraction at best and a real stress at worst. Add in that Elie is considered the "next in line" if the Kings combust, and this isn't your average "top assistant leaves" type deal.

Elie's DUI was a gut punch, but he's still considered a promising young coach. I'd hate to see him go, personally.
