The Bee's Jason Jones talked to Geoff Petrie about the "nominal improvement" of the 2011-12 Sacramento Kings and what happens next. Petrie continued a recent trend of saying that Jason Thompson will be tendered a qualifying offer and that the club would like to keep him. But Petrie won't even commit to extending the $2.5 million qualifying offer to Greene. From Jones' piece:

After that, it's Donté (Greene), and we really haven't sat down and discussed the rest of the roster. Donté had some really good stretches for us, too. We'll have to wait and see how the draft order sorts out and see to what extent it becomes a potential allocation of resources.

By "resources" Petrie could mean cap space -- the Kings have $15 million of space before accounting for the draft pick, Thompson and Terrence Williams -- or he could mean actual cash. The minimum salary will be about $49 million again; the draft pick and J.T. would get the Kings to that threshold.

The Kings could also forego the QO and sign Greene to a smaller per-year number with cap space, but chances are Donte would test the market if cut free from the shackles of restricted free agency.

If the Kings do extend the QO, Greene can actually sign it before it is rescinded, which would put him on a one-year, $2.5 million contract, with unrestricted free agency available in July 2013. Just extending the QO would allow the Kings to match any offer sheet Greene signs with another club this offseason and execute a sign-and-trade involving him.
