From the press release:
SACRAMENTO, CA - Today, Trojan Horse Productions and Franklin Pictures announced that the world premiere of "Playing to Win: A Relentless Pursuit to Save a Team" will take place on the evening of Wednesday, April 29th at the Esquire IMAX Theater in downtown Sacramento. The film will premiere as part of the Sacramento Film Festival.
"I'm proud and excited to share this film with our incredible community," said Executive Producer Kevin Nagle. "This is a story of, by and for the fans. Not just fans of the Kings - but fans of Sacramento."
The film chronicles the heartache, fight and resolve during the tumultuous era in Kings' history when the franchise seemed destined to relocate to Seattle. Viewers will be taken through the emotional and uplifting journey of how the fans, the City of Sacramento, and the new ownership group were able to keep the Kings in the Capital City, while under the constant threat of sale and relocation to outside investors.
"After years of hard work by so many people in this community, we are thrilled to be able to present this film on the big screen," said Rusty Prevatt, the film's director. "The threat of the Kings leaving Sacramento for Seattle brought this community together in a way we have never witnessed before. We hope our film has captured the city's passion for keeping its beloved team in Sacramento."
The "Playing to Win" premiere date - April 29th - will commemorate the two-year anniversary of the historic 7-0 vote by the NBA Relocation Committee in 2013 to recommend keeping the Kings franchise is Sacramento. That vote would be subsequently reaffirmed by the entire NBA Board of Governors on May 15th, solidifying Sacramento's hold of the team and ending the threat of relocation to Seattle.
Guests expected at the premiere include some of the top luminaries, past and present, from the Kings, City, business community, and grassroots Kings fan groups. Following the premiere, general audiences will have the opportunity to view the film during a limited theatrical release with select movie theaters in the Sacramento region. More information regarding the premiere and the subsequent limited theatrical release will be available in the coming weeks.
The film features exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage of the fight to save the Kings, as well as candid interviews with a range of key players in the saga, including Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, Kings Managing Partner Vivek Ranadivé, Kings President Chris Granger, KHTK 1140AM radio host Carmichael Dave, and Kings broadcasters Grant Napear, Jerry Reynolds, and Gary Gerould.
"Playing to Win" will be featured as one of more than 50 films to be shown during the Sacramento Film Festival, April 25 to May 3.
