Ah August. The slowest month of the year when it comes to basketball and Kings related news. In a way, it's kind of nice, because the season itself can get pretty hectic with how much goes on. But then again, I can't wait for it to start each and every year because every year brings new hope.
Because there really isn't much going on right now, I thought I'd take a little time to kind of explain some of what we have coming down the pipeline as well as some of my current plans for the website going forward. Recently, a FanPost was published titled "Thoughts on how STR can better serve readers". While I disagreed with most of the sentiments, it still gnaws at me that there are some readers out there that aren't satisfied, but I also think some of that comes from people not totally understanding how this website works and functions.
I've been writing for Sactown Royalty for more than 5 years now. Some members of the staff, like Greg and the Robs (good band name), have been on board even longer. Since taking over for Ziller a couple of years ago, I've added some more voices to the team, all talented guys that ensure this website can provide the latest news, opinions and more on everything Sacramento Kings related.
It takes a lot of work to run this website. Every member of the staff either holds down a full-time job, goes to school, or both. This is a labor of love, something that we do in our spare time because of our passion for Sacramento Kings basketball.
Here are some of the things that I think we do well:
- Providing a forum for Kings fans to discuss the team and anything else.
- Providing a place where Kings fans can come and find all the latest news about the team.
- Providing opinion and analysis on the team.
- Providing original reporting on the team (in large part thanks to the amazing efforts of Blake Ellington)
- Providing extra original content, such as the Podcast
- Providing more avenues for you guys to have a voice
Regarding those points, first let's talk about moderation. Moderation is a tough and thankless job and for most of this website's life, that job has been held by section214 aka Rob. Rob has done an amazing job over the years at keeping trolls and threads under control despite a large amount of grief and frustration directed at him, especially when he makes a tough decision.
Over the years, StR has grown exponentially and as such the amount of moderation work needed exceeds the capacity of one individual. Rob hasn't been able to post or write anything Kings-related in a long time in large part because so much of his free time is taken up by commenting and moderation. As such I'd like to see the formation of an official moderation team, one that I've promised Rob to make for a while now. I'll be contacting some of you to see if you'd be interested in the coming days, but if you spend a lot of time in threads already and would be interested in applying, let us know at email@example.com.
In regards to providing more avenues for you guys, there are a few things that I think we can do better. For one, I'd like to continue highlighting and encouraging FanPosts. The FanPosts is where I got my start writing and it was much the same for others on our staff. The new SB Nation design doesn't make the FanPosts as prominent as they were before and so we've been trying to help that out by highlighting certain FanPosts and moving them to the cover. I'm also going to be reverting back the amount of "recs" that it takes to move a FanPost into the recommended section to 5 from 10.
I'd also like to provide certain opportunities for people to contribute to the front page without having to write FanPosts. I'm thinking about making Game Previews for this season up for grabs to whoever wishes to write them. We'll edit them and then post them to the front page under your name. I'll try to come up with a clear application process for that as the season comes closer, but in the meantime if you're interested, e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We're also probably going to be re-introducing the StR Mailbag this year, so if you ever have a site or Kings-related question, just shoot us an e-mail. Ideally I'd like this to be a once a week or at least twice a month mailbag.
As for editing, that's something that I personally need to do better. It's always embarrassing to me when I spend a lot of time on a post or article and one of the first comments is pointing out a mistake that I've made. So much of the time when I write something I simply want to get it out there as soon as possible (particularly if it's breaking news) instead of going back and re-reading it for any mistakes. I'll try to do a better job of that going forward, especially as errors can sometimes cause confusion.
Hopefully this post was helpful in understanding a little bit more of the inner workings of the site. I always love receiving any feedback or suggestions so please feel free to do so in either the comments below or in an e-mail. I hope to begin implementing some of these mentioned changes in the near future and as always, thanks for reading. Without you guys, this wouldn't be nearly as fun to do.
