5 Things You Didn't Know About Marco Belinelli

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

The beauty of following a basketball team as closely as we follow the Sacramento Kings is that through nothing but unavoidable time spent obsessing over the comings and going of this organization, we get to know a lot about the players that play here, on and off the court.

When I was doing a little recon on Predrag Drobnjak for a post last week, I came across a truly amazing personal website from his time with the Seattle Supersonics. I thought, ‘there has to be so much of this weird stuff out there just waiting to be found’ and hence, the truly buzzfeedy ‘things you didn’t know about’ series was born.

We know almost all there is to know about DeMarcus Cousins, Rudy Gay, Ben McLemore, and the rest of the old squad. We don’t know all that much about the newcomers, Marco Belinelli, Rajon Rondo, Seth Curry, Kosta Koufos, Caron Butler, James Anderson, and Duje Dukan. Maybe some of them have weird quirky things I personally find interesting, maybe they have interesting or obscure basketball related relationships or accomplishments worth passing along, and maybe they don’t. If they do, I’ll write about it, if they don’t, I won’t.

I knew Marco Belinelli would be a lay up, so we’ll start there. I didn’t find a cool website, because this isn’t 2001, but I did find … stuff. Some of which you are probably already aware of, and some of it you may not be. Enjoy.

This is probably the first thing Google will spit out if you search for Marco Belinelli, and for good reason. It's just ... yeah. Best to get this one out of the way.

2. A relationship with Rajon Rondo

Marco Belinelli has some sort of relationship with Rajon Rondo that goes as far back as 2012 when Rondo and Belinelli appeared at some Red Bull promotional basketball thing on Alcatraz. How’s that for a sentence? This is only relevant because Rondo and Belinelli both signed with the Kings this summer, and in a meeting with Vlade Divac, reports surfaced that Rondo had asked Divac to sign a shooter. Did Rondo ask for a shooter, or did Rondo ask for Belinelli? Rajon Rondo had an internship with GQ in 2012. Just saying.

All of this is to say that there will be some valid concerns surrounding the Kings and their ability to build good chemistry considering all of the new pieces Divac acquired this summer, but it appears as though most, if not all, of them have some sort of prior relationship that would suggest all of these guys genuinely like each other off the court and may be able to figure that chemistry thing out sooner than later. Also, I like thinking Rajon Rondo told GQ that getting Belinelli semi-nude on the cover would be a major win for the magazine. That’s some grade-A Kings fan fiction material.

3. Three-Point Contest Winner

Marco Belinelli won the 2014 three-point contest, defeating Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal in the final round.

4. First Italian-Born NBA Champion

On a slightly more serious note, Belinelli became the first Italian-born NBA champion when the San Antonio Spurs won their 5th NBA Championship in 2014. He has a tattoo to commemorate this accomplishment, which leads me to the Fedora tattoo.

I'm going to resist the urge to poke fun at this because it represent the hat his grandfather would wear all the time, which means in turn I'm going to have to get pants covered in olive oil stains tattooed on my arm someday.
