Every year we convince ourselves that this year will be different. This will be the year that we make the leap forward, that the Kings contend for a playoff spot, that the Kings shock the world. But this year feels different. Some still have higher expectations, but there's a significant portion of the fan base entering this season with lowered expectations.
But maybe that's a good thing. Any success is a pleasant surprise. Any struggles are expected. As the old saying goes, we’ll either be happily surprised or we’ll be right
But I can't help but feel defeated by these lower expectations. Part of the joy of sports is believing that your team could do something special. I don't have that feeling. I can't see the plan, and can't see the goal. I don't know what I'm cheering for.
Lowered expectations may help us avoid some pain, but in the meantime they take away the best part of sports. They take away the hope.
