For those hoping that DeMarcus Cousins would get a technical foul rescinded and not miss Wednesday’s game against the Celtics as a result, wish for something else because the NBA has officially confirmed that Cousins will be suspended for picking up his 16th technical foul.
Since the NBA has implemented its 16 technical foul limit in 2005, no NBA player has reached the 16 tech limit faster than Cousins did this year. Per Comcast Bay Area, the previous record holder was Dwight Howard back in 2011, when he picked his 16th up on March 5th of that season.
This is the third time in his career that Cousins has reached the technical foul limit but the first time that it came well before the end of the season. As such, Cousins will now face a suspension without pay from the league for every other technical he picks up going forward. From our own section214, if Cousins keeps his current rate of techs up, he’ll end up missing games 61, 69 and 77. Not including fines, Cousins will lose upwards of $200,000 each game he is suspended simply in lost salary.
Cousins was also fined $25k for “making an inappropriate statement and gesture” after Saturday’s game against the Warriors. For those wondering what that was about, Cousins gave a Warriors fan the double-bird salute and said “F*** Golden State!” on the way to the locker room after the Kings victory.
