30Q: What will you be rooting for this season?

New, comments

With a team looking to be among the bottom in the league yet again, we look for hope.

We’re only a short while away from Kings basketball returning and normally this is a time of the year where I get excited and hyped up for the season to come after months of not seeing my team on the court. But at some points this summer I’ve seriously considered why I still root for this team. Why do I spend so much time focusing on a team that hasn’t been good for so long that the last time they played meaningful games, I was barely into high school? Why do I spend so much time writing and stressing about a franchise that continuously does things I disagree with? Is it all even worth it?

I don’t know. But what I do know is that I’m not giving up. At least not yet. This is still the team we fought so hard to keep in this town (and more importantly, did). This is still the team that gave me memories to last a lifetime, and one I have so much fun talking about, arguing about and even just commiserating about.

And this current squad is so damn likeable, even if there aren’t any sure things. Is De’Aaron Fox the next franchise cornerstone like we so desperately had hoped? Hell if I know, but I’m more excited to see him take the next step than perhaps anyone on the roster.

Marvin Bagley wasn’t the guy I wanted with the second pick, and I even went so far as to declare that drafting him would be a mistake, but I’ve been wrong before and I’m going to be rooting like hell for him to prove me wrong yet again.

With Bagley’s addition, the Kings also have the youngest squad they’ve ever assembled. 10 players on the current roster are in their first four years in the league. Buddy Hield looks like he could be on the verge of becoming one of the league’s best shooters. Willie Cauley-Stein hasn’t gotten it together consistently but he’s shown flashes on both sides of the floor. Harry Giles has already won over the hearts of Kings fans everywhere with his work ethic, tenacity and charisma. Bogdan Bogdanovic came in as a “veteran rookie” and proved to be one of the team’s best players in his first year in the NBA. There’s a lot to like.

Will the team win a lot? No, but we know that going in. This is not a team built to win now, and after so many years of the team wasting its assets trying to futilely do so (another reason why we don’t have to worry about tanking this year as we don’t have a 2019 draft pick due to another shortsighted move) it’s kind of nice to see the Kings fully commit to a rebuild based on youth like we’ve asked for all these years.

So yeah, I’m going to keep rooting for this team, through its ups and downs. It should be a fun year, for better or worse, and I’m glad I have all of you to share it with. What will you be rooting for in the coming season?
